SUMMARY:Loxahatchee River Trip
DESCRIPTION:THIS TRIP IS FOR VERY EXPERIENCED KAYAKERS ONLY.\nIf you have any questions about your fitness please message me (James) directly before signing up.\nWe’ll meet at Riverbend Park in Jupiter\, shuttle cars to Jonathan Dickinson State Park\, then drive back to Riverbend to start the 7.5-mile journey down the Loxahatchee River. The river has a couple dams that we will need to traverse. With the water levels high\, however\, this shouldn’t be an issue. The river is narrow and windy until it opens up closer to Jonathan Dickinson State Park. We’ll go through fresh water and brackish water on the trip\, and hopefully see an abundance of wildlife!\nThe state park is 35 minutes away and there is an entrance fee and a parking fee\, so we need to keep this in mind when shuttling vehicles. This trip is limited to 20 people to minimize the logistics of transportation.\nSometimes there is a 5K race going on at Riverbend Park. if that is the case we will launch from the outfitter parking lot right as you come into Riverbend Park.

DESCRIPTION:Great trip for beginners or anyone that needs to rent a kayak! We’ll launch from Paddling Paradise\, 4220 Dixie Hwy NE\, Palm Bay. You can rent a kayak there\, but please call ahead to reserve a craft. It’s an easy launch area\, so we should be in the water by 9:15. We’ll travel up Turkey Creek through the Sanctuary to the dam and back. There may be some manatees\, dolphins\, turtles\, and possibly alligators along the way! It’s a nice slow paddle with generally smooth waters. Please make sure to call 321-258-4492 if you need to rent a kayak or Paddleboard.

It’s best to see during a new moon when the night is darkest. As such\, please bring a small light\, preferably red\, so that other kayakers can tell where you are. (And bug spray for the pesky critters!) We’ll meet at Kiwanis Island Park at the building near the entrance. There will probably be some kayak outfitters there\, so look for our group. It will be a short paddle\, generally about an hour total\, but well worth it if we find bioluminescence!

SUMMARY:An Evening on Crane Creek
DESCRIPTION:An evening paddle close to home. Put in at Scurrah’s Landing at Riverview Park –> 2421 Riverview Dr\, paddle north on the Indian River past the Chart House Restaurant and through the marina to Crane Creek. The creek winds through the downtown area\, past both lush Florida greenery and several houses on the river. Once you can’t paddle anymore\, it’s time to turn around and head back. This is a nice centrally located paddle for those who don’t want to travel too far. After the paddle we’ll meet at Meg O’Malley’s for a little social time.

DESCRIPTION:An evening paddle in central Brevard. Put in at Ballard Park\, 924 Thomas Barbour Drive. Go west on the Eau Gallie River under a bridge\, and up the river. Once you can’t paddle anymore\, it’s time to turn around and head back. On the way back\, there’s a small tributary around the boat docks to the south we can take for a little more paddling! This is an easy centrally located paddle and we may see some manatees and dophins! After the paddle we’ll meet at Pineapples top deck in the Eau Gallie District for a little social time.

SUMMARY:Mangroves of Thousand Island - Cocoa Beach
DESCRIPTION:For this paddle we’ll stay local and explore Thousand Islands in Cocoa Beach. We’ve done this one before\, and it’s a favorite. There are lots of mangrove trails to wind through\, along with open water for those less adventurous (or with longer kayaks/paddleboards)! Meet at Ramp Road Park at 8:45 to launch by 9:00. Everyone should be in the water by 9. This is a popular spot for kayaking. There’s lots of parking\, but you should still get there early to get a spot! We will need an organizer/leader for this trip if anyone has done it before and wants to do that.

DESCRIPTION:Space Coast Audubon is joining forces with the Brevard Zoo to offer a private group FrogWatch training program and field practice. The class will be held after hours in the education center\, with field practice inside the Zoo property. A $5.00 donation (cash only – collected at the door) is required to cover cost of materials. Each participant will receive a flashdrive with the frog calls. **** Materials must be ordered in advance\, so please only sign up if you can definitely attend. You will be responsible to cover the $5 fee if you cancel less than 72 hours from the class start time.**** \nFrogWatch USA is a citizen science program established in 1998 to provide individuals\, groups and families with opportunities to learn about wetlands in their communities by reporting on the calls of local frogs and toads. Through Brevard Zoo’s FrogWatch USA training program\, trained individuals will be able to listen for frogs and toads during evenings and submit their observations to a national online database. **Check in will begin at 5:45 at the EdZOOcation gate north of the zoo’s main entrance.** The training will start at 6:00 pm\, and will conclude with an immersive in the field practice in the Brevard Zoo Wetlands classroom\, a pavilion overlooking Brevard Zoo’s restored wetlands habitat. \nPlease Bring: $5 cash donation\, refillable water bottle\, bug spray\, and wear shoes that can get wet or muddy. \nLooking forward to sharing another tool for contributing to Community Science data.\nRochelle

DESCRIPTION:**(Courtesy Post to make our members aware of this Event – Space Coast Audubon is not hosting this event)** \nRegarding the dispute between the EEL Program and the Town of Malabar regarding the Malabar Scrub Sanctuary\, a conflict resolution meeting will be held. \nThe meeting is public and public speakers will be allowed. The issue here is that the off-road bikers want the trees preserved throughout the property to shade the trails. The property has multiple families of Florida Scrub Jays and had good scrub habitat if maintained properly. This property is attractive for scrub jays because it is very close to other scrub habitat with jays\, including Jordan Scrub\, another EEL sanctuary. Mike Knight\, with support of the SMC\, has offered to preserve the trees along the property borders and to move the bike trails to the edges. Apparently\, the mountain bikers and some on the Town Council won’t accept that offer. \nIf you are interested in attending this meeting\, you are welcome to do so and provide your input if you would like. Speakers will likely need to submit a speaker card and each speaker typically gets 3 minutes only. \nLocation is the First Baptist Church fellowship hall. 1665 Malabar Road in Malabar. The meeting starts at 10am.

DESCRIPTION:***Florida’s Butterflies & How to Garden for Them*** is a neatly packaged presentation that shares a lifetime of information gleaned from the author’s interest in Florida’s butterflies and his efforts to attract them to the home landscape. Answered are the questions: Why garden for butterflies\, what makes butterflies different from moths\, and why are populations declining? Also highlighted are their life cycles\, host\, and favorite nectar plants. Attendees will learn ways they can easily attract these flying beauties to their own properties. The author has participated in annual North American Butterfly Association counts throughout Central Florida for the last 10 years and has a good knowledge of Florida’s butterfly species\, their native hostplants\, and the perils they face. \nFollowing the presentation\, we will walk through the butterfly garden and native plant areas to observe butterflies. Ed (presenter/instructor) will be available to assist with identification. Depending on how many butterflies we see\, we may also go for a short hike to look for additional species. The classroom and butterfly garden area are fully accessible for limited mobility guests. \n***** This program is being offered for free and the instructor is donating his time. Tip donations for the instructor are optional\, and greatly appreciated.***** \n**About our instructor (Ed Perry):**\nEd Perry recently retired as a 31-year Park Ranger at Sebastian Inlet State Park. He enjoys fishing\, butterfly gardening\, growing & grafting tropical fruit trees\, beachcombing (for sea-beans!)\, tropical fish aquaria\, wildlife photography\, and sharing life with his twenty-four-year-old daughter Gayle (single father). Ed is a 56 year-old Florida native that graduated from the University of Florida in 1988. Organizations represented include Surfrider Foundation\, Sea Turtle Preservation Society and more! BeachFly Brewing Company will donate a portion of sales to the participating organizations. The Ocean Lega-Sea Festival is on **April 29\, 2023** from **3 PM to 8 PM** at **513 Barton Blvd in Rockledge**. \nThe organizations will have items for sale and educational materials. In addition\, televisions inside the brewery will continually display educational information from the groups. Each organization also has the opportunity to do a live presentation concerning their cause during the festival. This APP records observations of nearly any type of living organism including: frogs\, plants\, snakes\, spiders\, insects\, and trees. \nSams House naturalist\, Shannon Steele\, and Chelsea Miller\, Space Coast Audubon member will deliver an overview of the application for approximately 45 minutes. Following the presentation\, participants will be set free to explore the Sams House gardens\, hiking trails\, bird feeders and any space where leaving creatures can be found to capture observations and practice the skills learned. \nPlease download the iNaturalist APP prior to the class as the WiFi is a bit unreliable and cell signal can be spotty. It’s an easy launch area\, so we should be in the water by 9:45. We’ll travel up Turkey Creek through the Sanctuary to the dam and back. There may be some manatees\, dolphins\, turtles\, and possibly alligators along the way! DESCRIPTION:Join us for our monthly meeting and educational presentation.\n**Water\, Wetlands and Wildife – Update on the Orlando Wetlands Park**\nPresenter Bio:\nMark Sees has been the Wetlands Program Manager for the City of Orlando for the last 24 years. Prior to this\, for 5 years he was a consulting biologist with an engineering/consulting firm: Post\, Buckley\, Schuh and Jernigan\, inc. Mark’s primary duties include managing the Orlando Easterly Wetlands Program – a large scale constructed treatment system and has been involved in numerous water quality enhancement projects and the design of smaller constructed wetland treatment systems.\nMark is licensed as commercial aquatic herbicide applicator\, certified prescribed burn manager\, commercial drone pilot and winner of the National Wetlands Award in 2018 along with a Congressional Service Award for his work in wetlands. SUMMARY:Paddling St. Lucie Inlet Preserve State Park
DESCRIPTION:This classic Florida barrier island is accessible only by boat\, and it is worth the ride. A boardwalk takes visitors through mangrove forests and hammocks of live oaks\, cabbage palms\, paradise trees and wild limes to a neatly preserved Atlantic beach. The preserve is a favorite of nature students interested in learning about the native flora and fauna of Florida barrier islands. The kayak trail is 4.2 miles long and takes a leisurely three hours to complete\, meandering through mangrove estuaries and maritime hammocks where you can see the plant and animals that make their home at the park. Wading birds such as blue heron\, white ibis and snowy egrets are common along the trail\, and there is a good chance you will view osprey flying overhead. We’ll stop at the south beach access point to park your kayak for a short walk over to the beautiful park beach.\nLaunch from Cove Road Park – parking is very limited. The event fee covers state park entrance fees.

DESCRIPTION:Trip Leaders: Jim Stahl\, Kay Stahl\, Matt Heyden\, Lora Losi\nCombining the plant\, insect and birding expertise of our 3 field trip leaders the group will be on the lookout for butterflies\, wildflowers and birds. The trip be mostly driving\, with short walks\, while enjoying a variety of habitats and wildlife diversity in this 28\,000 acre property. Each car will have a radio to share sightings and announce stopping points. Please plan to arrive by 0815 to allow time to pay your $3 entrance fee and use the restroom next to the Pay Station prior to meeting the Trip Leaders in the dirt parking lot across the road from the Hunter Check In station. \nPark Fee: Daily entrance fee is **$3 per person** (this is a rate change\, as it used to be a per vehicle fee). You’ll need to bring exact cash.
