DESCRIPTION:Sams House will host a Big Sit event from 9am-3pm on Saturday October 7\, 2023. \nThe Big Sit is just a fun event for birders to see and hear as many species as they can within a 17 ft circle. The rules are stay inside the circle and at least one person must be present at all times. \nPlease note: \n*This event is better suited for as confident/advanced birders vs beginner\, as sight identification and birding by ear will be used. \nWe have found an area that should be a good place and will be shaded and near the cabin and house. Naturalist Shannon Steele and myself will be participating in some capacity throughout the day\, but we will not be able to be inside the circle all day long. \nI would like to create shifts of 1 or 2 hours for this event\, or you are welcome to stay the duration. \nBring a comfortable chair\, water\, binocs\, and have a great time!!

DESCRIPTION:An evening paddle close to home. Put in at Scurrah’s Landing at Riverview Park –> 2421 Riverview Dr\, paddle north on the Indian River past the Chart House Restaurant and through the marina to Crane Creek. The creek winds through the downtown area\, past both lush Florida greenery and several houses on the river. Once you can’t paddle anymore\, it’s time to turn around and head back. This is a nice centrally located paddle for those who don’t want to travel too far.

SUMMARY:Blue Springs State Park - paddle and swim
DESCRIPTION:Someone mentioned paddling at a nearby spring at the last Meet and Greet so let’s go to Blue Springs State Park. \nWe will meet at Highbanks Marina & Camp Resort\, West Highbanks Road\, DeBary\, FL at 8:30 am to unload boats. At 8:45 am we will start the 20 minute car shuttle to French Landing Boat Ramp\, 2100 W French Ave\, Orange City\, FL 32763. We will drive all of the cars to French Landing and then drive the fewest number of cars back to Highbanks. \nWe will paddle downstream on the St Johns River to Blue Springs State Park. There is a $2 charge to enter the park from the water. We will have time to swim / snorkel near the springs boil and have lunch. The French Landing Boat Ramp is just a quarter mile up from Blue Springs State Park. \nWe will not be paddling at a fast pace\, but you must be able to keep up with the group. This is not the trip to be trying out a new non-traditional boat (i.e. inflatable / foldable). It you have used the boat before and can maintain a good pace then you will be welcome. The only reason I feel that I have to state this is that in the past we have had to tow people to the end and that is no fun for anyone concerned. SUMMARY:Warbler Walk -  Winter Migration Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Warblers and other migratory birds have started to return to our area. Please join us for a short walk and field trip to try to observe several species of wintering birds. \n**11:45am** Meet at Oak and Palm Hammock trail parking lot at the Merritt Island NWR. We will bird start birding in the parking lot then progress to the boardwalk and the trail.\n**1:15pm** Travel to MINWR visitor center for picnic lunch and to review checklist of all birds observed. This time is approximate and may vary depending on our sightings.\n**** For anyone attending the Bagels and Buntings morning event at Merritt Island NWR you can refill your water bottle\, get a free maps\, and head to the Warbler Walk just down the road. ** Separate sign up for that event on Meetup.** \n**Warblers we *may* see:** pine\, black & white\, American redstart\, palm\, Black-throated Blue\, Yellow-throated. Possibility to observe Chestnut-sided and Blackburnian. We will also keep an eye out for Summer and Scarlet Tanagers and Swainson’s Thrush and Veery. \n**Please bring:** sun protection\, refillable water\, picnic lunch\, binoculars (let us know if you need a loaner pair) \nOptional: Warbler Guide APP or folding guide. Trip Leader and Host will have Warbler Guide reference books and folding guides. \nLogistics: No restroom or potable water at Oak and Palm Hammock trail. Restrooms\, water and snacks available inside the MINWR Visitor Center. We will use the picnic tables outside (weather permitting) for our lunch gathering following the walk. The Visitor Center also has free maps of the Refuge with details about all the hiking trails. This trip has partial mobility access on the boardwalk and flattened dirt areas in the parking area to sit and observe birds. \nDirections: Follow the A. Max Brewer Parkway (CR402) over the Max Brewer bridge in Titusville. Stay to the right when the road divides. Once you pass the Merritt Island NWR Visitor Center sign\, travel 1.5 miles. Oak and Palm Hammock Trailhead will be on your left. Large parking area. We will meet in front of the trailhead information kiosk. \nTrail Highlights: **Oak Hammock Trail** features tall oaks\, sword ferns crowd densely along the trail. A dense canopy of oaks shades an understory of tall saw palmettos. Citrus trees grow wild here\, a remnant of a homestead from the 1940s. Captain Douglas Dummitt established the very first citrus grove in America not far north of here in 1807. **Palm Hammock Trail** treats visitors to a lush forest of mature saw palmettos under a dense canopy of live oaks on the way to an island of cabbage palms.

Painted and Indigo Buntings are primarily migrant and winter residents here from the breeding grounds north of us. Painted Buntings breed along the east coast from NE Florida up to about Virginia. Indigo Buntings breed over much of the eastern US.\nWe will gather briefly in the auditorium to share a few tips for safe viewing of the birds. The group will proceed to the boardwalk area for a chance to observe the buntings at the feeder. Participants are welcome to capture photographs and video footage. Binoculars are recommended (arrive early if you would like to check out a loaner pair from our Visitor Center Welcome Desk). \nThe group will return to the auditorium after the observation time to enjoy a Bunting Themed Bagel Buffet. We will celebrate some of our 2022-2023 accomplishments\, report interesting bird sighting as migration kicks off\, and share updates on Field Trips and activities planned for this birding season. \n**Potluck Social** \nWe kindly request each person bring a dish to share. Please indicate in the comments which category of food or drink item you plan to bring. Seeing a general list of what people plan to bring helps us to avoid having too many items in the same category. Generally we need the biggest quantity of meat and casserole category items. We will provide serving utensils\, silverware and power strips to plug in crockpots and warming trays. \n** Sustainable Event ** \nPlease bring your own personal food service gloves\, if preferred\, a cloth reusable napkin and a container for leftovers. We are looking for 3-4 volunteers to stay after the event closes to hand wash\, dry and put away the silverware and utensils. This will enable us to use the Church’s dinner service items and alleviate use of plastic. DESCRIPTION:Let’s paddle Shingle Creek. I checked out the launch and take out sites today (Sunday). We will meet at Marsh Landing at 9 am and unload the boats. We will start the car shuttle to Big Toho Marina by 9:15 am. If you need more time then please plan to arrive earlier\, We will leave someone with the boats\, drive all the cars to Big Toho Marina\, park in the huge parking lot\, and bring the fewest possible number of cars back to Marsh Landing. We will paddle upstream no more than a mile\, turnaround and paddle downstream past Marsh Landing to Lake Toho. Lake Toho is a big grass filled lake with channels for navigation. This will not be a repeat of the St Johns River trip where some members are still in therapy for their time on white-cap-encrusted Lake Washington. We will paddle to the east side of Paradise Island and stop for lunch at the county park (thanks to edward for this part of the plan)\, and then make our way to Big Toho Marina at the Kissimmee Lakefront Boat Ramp. Expect at least 8 miles of paddling. There will be bathrooms available at both Marsh Landing and at Big Toho Marina (Big Toho Marina\, 69 Lakeview Dr\, Kissimmee\, FL 34741). There is no cost to park at either place. \nPlease review the maps to be familiar with the area. \nIf\, for some reason\, you are too late to join the shuttle then check in with Yvette or Donna at Marsh Landing for instructions. \nThere is a “boatload” of auto traffic in Kissimmee\, so Virginia\, just because google maps gives you an estimate of travel time required if may not actually be true. \nSince football season is upon us I will go with a gridiron metaphor: we will be monitoring the weather\, and I reserve the right to make game-day / line-of-scrimmage modifications to the paddling plan. We’ll meet at Kiwanis Island Park at the building near the entrance. There will probably be some kayak outfitters there\, so look for our group. It will be a short paddle\, generally about an hour total\, but well worth it if we find bioluminescence!

DESCRIPTION:THIS TRIP IS FOR VERY EXPERIENCED KAYAKERS ONLY.\nIf you have any questions about your fitness please message me (James) directly before signing up.\nWe’ll meet at Riverbend Park in Jupiter\, shuttle cars to Jonathan Dickinson State Park\, then drive back to Riverbend to start the 7.5-mile journey down the Loxahatchee River. The river has a couple dams that we will need to traverse. With the water levels high\, however\, this shouldn’t be an issue. The river is narrow and windy until it opens up closer to Jonathan Dickinson State Park. We’ll go through fresh water and brackish water on the trip\, and hopefully see an abundance of wildlife!\nThe state park is 35 minutes away and there is an entrance fee and a parking fee\, so we need to keep this in mind when shuttling vehicles. This trip is limited to 20 people to minimize the logistics of transportation.\nSometimes there is a 5K race going on at Riverbend Park. if that is the case we will launch from the outfitter parking lot right as you come into Riverbend Park.

DESCRIPTION:Courtesy Post: This event is being hosted by the Merritt Island Wildlife Association (Friends Group of Merritt Island NWR) \n**Beauty of Butterflies**\nJoin us for an opportunity to enjoy butterflies in wild spaces. We will meet at the Merritt Island NWR Visitor Center in the Auditorium for a brief presentation on butterfly basics. Following the educational session\, the group will travel (in your own vehicle) to Sendler Education Output inside the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge to search for butterflies. \nResource books\, folding identification guides\, and Florida Butterfly Checklists will be available. DESCRIPTION:The Sunday trip filled up fast\, so here’s a second night Please sign up for only one night. Who wants to look for Bioluminescence? Hopefully the weather will calm down and with July’s new moon it should be the perfect time to witness this amazing natural phenomenon caused by an algae bloom of plankton. We are so lucky to be one of the few places on earth this exists! If we find some\, the water will glow when your paddle breaks through it! It’s best to see during a new moon when the night is darkest. As such\, please bring a small light\, preferably red\, so that other kayakers can tell where you are. (And bug spray for the pesky critters!) We’ll meet at Kiwanis Island Park at the building near the entrance. There will probably be some kayak outfitters there\, so look for our group. It will be a short paddle\, generally about an hour total\, but well worth it if we find bioluminescence!
