Often difficult to identify and categorize\, recent advances in genetic science are finally answering many of the questions that puzzled ornithologists. From the odd choice of the common name for this family to establishing the definition of what makes a warbler a warbler\, the history of the human relationship with this group is almost as fascinating as the birds themselves.\nIn this program\, we will dive into the world of the warblers and the people who first noticed\, described and studied these wonderful creatures. During Joan’s first season as a “birder” in 1988 she was captivated by a fallout of these previously unimagined sprites along the shores of Lake Erie. She never looked back. It’s a narrative repeated by thousands of fellow birders.

Just a HeadsUp. \nCrested Caracara are using seen in the area and we will look for wintering warblers\, flycatchers\, and waders.

DESCRIPTION:For ADVANCED PADDLERS only – advanced in ability not just in age. \nWe will paddle from the Seminole State Forest down Blackwater Creek to where it converges with the St Johns River. We will continue north (downstream) to Highbanks Marina (about 8.5 miles). There will be a 35 minute car shuttle from the Forest to Highbanks and another 35 minutes back to the start. The googlemaps search words for Highbanks is: Highbanks Marina & Camp Resort\, West Highbanks Road\, DeBary\, FL. \nWe will meet at the locked gate at Seminole State Forest-Bear Pond Trailhead. \nThere may be fallen trees and other obstacles where you will need to exit your boat and go over / under / around to continue down the creek. We will all help each other. If that sounds like an adventure then this is the trip for you. If not\, then there will be other trips to sign up for. Anyone with a non-traditional boat needs to check with me first. There will be scoot-overs\, dead tree limbs\, etc\, so if you are feeling lucky and plan to bring an inflatable then you will need to bring a repair kit and know how to use it. DESCRIPTION:Hundred Acre Hollows has created an iNaturalist Project to identify the Animals\, Plants\, and Fungi found in Hundred Acre Hollows. https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/hundred-acre-hollows-melbourne-fl\nThere are currently 663 observations in this Project and the goal is to increase that by adding more than two hundred additional observations during a BioBlitz on November 4th from 8 AM – 11 AM. \nWe are also part of the Hundred Acre Hollows’ Neighboring Communities Network. It is part of the Neighborhood Natural Area Network\, a collaboration between University of Florida scientists\, IFAS extension\, and residents in neighborhoods throughout Florida. https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/hundred-acre-hollows-neighboring-communities-network \nWhat is a BioBlitz? A BioBlitz is a communal citizen-science effort to record as many species within a designated location and time as possible. A BioBlitz is a wonderful way to engage the public to connect to their environment while generating useful data for science and conservation. It is also an excuse for naturalists\, scientists\, and curious members of the public to meet in person in the great outdoors and have a lot of fun! \nTo support this BioBlitz all you need is a phone with a camera and the iNaturalist App and/or a digital camera and the ability to upload your photos to the iNaturalist Website. If you are not familiar with iNaturalist you can learn all you need to know at https://www.inaturalist.org/. If you only have 15 minutes and can make five observations\, you will help increase the scientific knowledge of life at Hundred Acre Hollows. You can come by at any time between 8 and 11 AM\, enjoy a walk around the property\, take some photos and submit your observations in iNaturalist during or after your visit. Stay for 15 minutes and make a few observations or stay for a couple of hours and make dozens of observations. It does not matter if you think others have already submitted a similar observation or not. DESCRIPTION:Advance your birding skills through use of technology. David Simpson and Dee Fairbanks-Simpson\, owners of Birding with David Simpson (professional bird guiding company) will share tips\, field examples\, and references on ways to utilize eBird to enhance your birding knowledge and field skills. \nIn the session we will explore features of the eBird APP using common scenarios. Some examples include: \n* A friend is visiting and she needs to tick Purple Gallinule off her list of birds she has seen in Florida. Where is she likely to find this bird in Brevard County?\n* You are traveling to St. Marks NWR in January and would like to know what birds are common at this location in the winter.\n* My friend ditched me to go chase flamingos. How did she know they were in the area and where to find them? \nThis is an intermediate level course and assumes attendees have a basic understanding of the eBird APP. To get the most out of the class\, please ensure you have installed the eBird APP\, downloaded at least one bird pack\, and added at least 2 bird observations to a checklist. We suggest checking for APP updates prior to the class. \nFollowing the instruction portion of the session we will travel to a nearby location for brief field practice. The class is being provided by professional birders who are donating their time. Our Space Coast Audubon chapter is offering the course for free. DESCRIPTION:Please note location change to Wilson’s Landing on the Wekiva River. \nKayak Junkies and Orlando Kayak Fishing Community are holding a Kayak & Swap Meet at Wilson’s Landing Park on Saturday\, October 21\, 2023 from 8am to 1pm. Yvette saw this on the Kayak Junkies Facebook page and thought it would be fun to invite our members to participate. We have all thought about upgrading our kayaks and here is a great chance to either on land or in the water try out different boats for possible purchase.\nI thought we could meet at 9 am\, unload boats\, and launch into the Wekiva river. Maybe paddle downstream to Katie’s Landing and back to Wilson’s Landing (about 3 miles round trip). We were going to practice some basic rescue skills but since the location changed this is no longer a good idea. The water is not deep enough and the vegatation is too plentiful. You can come a bit early and according to the flyer\, “Check out other kayaks\, setup\, and paddle items for sale or trade! Making friends is free.” This will be a great opportunity to talk with others about the best places to paddle in central Florida.\nI will give you more in the comments about the “pot lunch style lunch” and how we can best particiate (or you can bring your own lunch).\nSign up if you think you can make it to all or part of the event. This trip is on a weekday because the area is VERY busy\, so hopefully it will easier to navigate then. Clear waters around Peanut Island allow for great snorkeling. The island is very small and accessible only by boat. It has a walking trail around the perimeter\, so we can paddle to the island\, beach for awhile to do some snorkeling\, have a picnic\, take a walk\, paddle some more\, snorkel some more\, etc.\, etc. Bring some snacks/lunch/drinks/gear. It will be a laid back day! The launch area is next to Bicentennial Park in Riviera Beach. There is a nice Tiki bar in the parking area where we’ll get some après paddle refreshments before going home.

I am going to try to put all of the people that signed up originally on the “Going” list if they can make it on Oct 8th. If I get no responses\, then I am opening up RSVP’s to all. \nSomeone mentioned paddling at a nearby spring at the last Meet and Greet so let’s go to Blue Springs State Park. \nWe will meet at Highbanks Marina & Camp Resort\, West Highbanks Road\, DeBary\, FL at 8:30 am to unload boats. At 8:45 am we will start the 20 minute car shuttle to French Landing Boat Ramp\, 2100 W French Ave\, Orange City\, FL 32763. We will drive all of the cars to French Landing and then drive the fewest number of cars back to Highbanks. \nWe will paddle downstream on the St Johns River to Blue Springs State Park. There is a $2 charge to enter the park from the water. We will have time to swim / snorkel near the springs boil and have lunch. The French Landing Boat Ramp is just a quarter mile up from Blue Springs State Park. \nWe will not be paddling at a fast pace\, but you must be able to keep up with the group. This is not the trip to be trying out a new non-traditional boat (i.e. inflatable / foldable). It you have used the boat before and can maintain a good pace then you will be welcome. The only reason I feel that I have to state this is that in the past we have had to tow people to the end and that is no fun for anyone concerned. Put in at Scurrah’s Landing at Riverview Park –> 2421 Riverview Dr\, paddle north on the Indian River past the Chart House Restaurant and through the marina to Crane Creek. The creek winds through the downtown area\, past both lush Florida greenery and several houses on the river. Once you can’t paddle anymore\, it’s time to turn around and head back. This is a nice centrally located paddle for those who don’t want to travel too far.

SUMMARY:Blue Springs State Park - paddle and swim
DESCRIPTION:Someone mentioned paddling at a nearby spring at the last Meet and Greet so let’s go to Blue Springs State Park. \nWe will meet at Highbanks Marina & Camp Resort\, West Highbanks Road\, DeBary\, FL at 8:30 am to unload boats. At 8:45 am we will start the 20 minute car shuttle to French Landing Boat Ramp\, 2100 W French Ave\, Orange City\, FL 32763. We will drive all of the cars to French Landing and then drive the fewest number of cars back to Highbanks. \nWe will paddle downstream on the St Johns River to Blue Springs State Park. There is a $2 charge to enter the park from the water. We will have time to swim / snorkel near the springs boil and have lunch. The French Landing Boat Ramp is just a quarter mile up from Blue Springs State Park. \nWe will not be paddling at a fast pace\, but you must be able to keep up with the group. This is not the trip to be trying out a new non-traditional boat (i.e. inflatable / foldable). It you have used the boat before and can maintain a good pace then you will be welcome. The only reason I feel that I have to state this is that in the past we have had to tow people to the end and that is no fun for anyone concerned. SUMMARY:Warbler Walk -  Winter Migration Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Warblers and other migratory birds have started to return to our area. Please join us for a short walk and field trip to try to observe several species of wintering birds. \n**11:45am** Meet at Oak and Palm Hammock trail parking lot at the Merritt Island NWR. We will bird start birding in the parking lot then progress to the boardwalk and the trail.\n**1:15pm** Travel to MINWR visitor center for picnic lunch and to review checklist of all birds observed. This time is approximate and may vary depending on our sightings.\n**** For anyone attending the Bagels and Buntings morning event at Merritt Island NWR you can refill your water bottle\, get a free maps\, and head to the Warbler Walk just down the road. ** Separate sign up for that event on Meetup.** \n**Warblers we *may* see:** pine\, black & white\, American redstart\, palm\, Black-throated Blue\, Yellow-throated. Possibility to observe Chestnut-sided and Blackburnian. We will also keep an eye out for Summer and Scarlet Tanagers and Swainson’s Thrush and Veery. \n**Please bring:** sun protection\, refillable water\, picnic lunch\, binoculars (let us know if you need a loaner pair) \nOptional: Warbler Guide APP or folding guide. Trip Leader and Host will have Warbler Guide reference books and folding guides. \nLogistics: No restroom or potable water at Oak and Palm Hammock trail. Restrooms\, water and snacks available inside the MINWR Visitor Center. We will use the picnic tables outside (weather permitting) for our lunch gathering following the walk. The Visitor Center also has free maps of the Refuge with details about all the hiking trails. This trip has partial mobility access on the boardwalk and flattened dirt areas in the parking area to sit and observe birds. \nDirections: Follow the A. Max Brewer Parkway (CR402) over the Max Brewer bridge in Titusville. Stay to the right when the road divides. Once you pass the Merritt Island NWR Visitor Center sign\, travel 1.5 miles. Oak and Palm Hammock Trailhead will be on your left. Large parking area. We will meet in front of the trailhead information kiosk. \nTrail Highlights: **Oak Hammock Trail** features tall oaks\, sword ferns crowd densely along the trail. A dense canopy of oaks shades an understory of tall saw palmettos. Citrus trees grow wild here\, a remnant of a homestead from the 1940s. Captain Douglas Dummitt established the very first citrus grove in America not far north of here in 1807. **Palm Hammock Trail** treats visitors to a lush forest of mature saw palmettos under a dense canopy of live oaks on the way to an island of cabbage palms.

Please use contact details below for questions. \n**Bagels and Buntings**\nJoin us as we celebrate the return of the beautiful Painted (Passerina ciris) and Indigo (Passerina cyanea) Buntings arriving in Florida. Painted and Indigo Buntings are primarily migrant and winter residents here from the breeding grounds north of us. Painted Buntings breed along the east coast from NE Florida up to about Virginia. Indigo Buntings breed over much of the eastern US.\nWe will gather briefly in the auditorium to share a few tips for safe viewing of the birds. The group will proceed to the boardwalk area for a chance to observe the buntings at the feeder. Participants are welcome to capture photographs and video footage. Binoculars are recommended (arrive early if you would like to check out a loaner pair from our Visitor Center Welcome Desk). \nThe group will return to the auditorium after the observation time to enjoy a Bunting Themed Bagel Buffet. The buffet will include Painted Bunting Peanut Butter & Jelly\, Indigo blue berry jams\, and Millet morning trail mix.
