DESCRIPTION:Birds should be migrating south\, so let’s see what we can find at Ulumay Wildlife Refuge. Last December we saw lots of different species nesting in the refuge….. quite a site to see! There are lots of nooks and crannies in Ulumay to find all kinds of species\, so you never know what will be around the corner. \nParking is limited on Old Audubon Road\, so we will meet at BeachFly Brewing at 513 Barton Blvd in Rockledge at 9:15 to consolidate vehicles before caravanning to Merritt Island. After the paddle\, we’ll have a bite to eat and cold drink at BeachFly.

DESCRIPTION:**Special Use Permit: This part of TM Goodwin Waterfowl Management Area is closed to vehicles on Sunday. *PLEASE read the entire logistics prior to reserving a spot on this trip.* Early start and 5 hours of birding. After birding we will gather at Marsh Landing Restaurant at 1:30pm for holiday cheer.** \n**TM Goodwin Broadmoor Tract**\nTrip Leader: David Simpson\, Birding with David Simpson\n**06:45am** Meet at Fellsmere Grade Recreation Area (dirt parking lot next to the Boat Ramp). Check in and sign out radios to each car. \n**07:00am** Depart for Broadmoor track in vehicles. We will go directly to this section of the property and will not be birding the sections along the way. If time permits we will visit these areas as we depart. This field trip is available by Special Use Permit; therefore\, the area will not be open to the general public. The entrance gate will be closed and locked after we pass through.\n**** If you are late\, you will not be able to join the group as the gate will be locked and not opened by the Ranger until 2 hours later**** \n**0700 – 1300** Birding in Broadmoor. We will announce sightings using the radios along the way. The group will make regular stops to take photographs\, use scopes\, and scan the water & air for wildlife. If you need to depart early during the trip\, the Trip Leader and host will guide you on how to exit. \n**1300 – 1330** Travel to Marsh Landing Restaurant\, 44 N Broadway St\, Fellsmere\, FL 32948\n**1330 – 1530** Lunch and holiday cheer with birding themed activities \n**Bring breakfast treats\, hearty snacks\, drinks and water** – we will be birding for nearly 6 hours. We will strive to see as many as 100 species. Blue-winged teal\, green-winged teal\, Fulvous Whistling duck\, Northern harrier\, purple gallinule\, Gray-headed Swamphen\, American white pelicans\, and many more. \n*****If this is your first trip to the property please allow plenty of extra time to reach the parking lot by 0645am. From Babcock Road it is 6.5 miles to the parking area where we meet. It can take up to 17 minutes from the time you leave Babcock St SE and travel down Fellsmere Grade Rd. It is a dirt road and often bumpy\, so cars go slow.***** \n**Allow enough time to stop to use the restroom at one of the boat ramps along the way. The restroom near the meeting area is very foul as it is not maintained.** \nLogistics: Follow Fellsmere Grade Road all the way (west) until it dead ends at the boat ramp (6.5 miles from where you turn off Babcock Road). Drive until you can’t drive any further without going into the water. Park in the dirt lot next to the bridge. While you’re driving down Fellsmere Grade Road you will pass two boat ramps. I strongly suggest using the first restroom (shortly after you leave Babcock Road\, on the right near the Crew team storage buildings). The bathroom near our meeting area is not maintained and really disgusting (bring hand sanitizer\, your own toilet tissue and a nose plug if you plan to use it). There are no bathrooms once we depart from the parking lot and cross the bridge.\nThe trip is primarily driving\, with periodic stops for photos and to observe through scopes\, so the entire trip is suitable for anyone with limited mobility.\nPlease bring: Heavy snacks\, water/drinks\, bug repellent\, sunscreen\, and binoculars. The trip leader will check out a radio to each car to report sightings\, learn about the species seen\, and notify the group of stops. Use Meetup chat or Direct Message for any questions. DESCRIPTION:This was a popular event last year\, so he’s coming back to BeachFly! Alligator trapper and researcher Frank “Alligator” Robb has been working with Crocodilians for a living for 28 years now. He has a biomedical degree and looks at the benefits of these animals to human health related problems. He’s been part of studies involving endocrinology toxicology\, parasitology\, tracking\, nesting and more. Alligator Robb is an appointed member of the Crocodile Specialist Group and sits on the global board for human Crocodile conflict. He works with the nonprofit group\, Environmental Education Awareness\, Research\, Support and Services (EEARSS)\, to provide educational outreach and biodiversity studies on the Brevard County Environmentally Endangered Lands Properties. His presentation is sure to be interesting and informative. He is bringing several of his “pets” with him! \nWe will be collecting donations at the event to support EEARSS. Please donate at the event and/or purchase EEARSS merchandise.

SUMMARY:Waterfowl ID Class and Field Practice
DESCRIPTION:Waterfowl ID Class\nInstructors: Dee Fairbanks-Simpson and David Simpson\, owners of Birding with David Simpson \nThere are 29 species of ducks that have been found on MINWR. How many can you identify? \nDavid and Dee will share their expertise and experience in a class room presentation followed by a short field trip to try out your new skills. You will gain some tips and tricks on how to identify ducks in flight and on the water and how to separate confusing brown females. In addition to how to identify the species\, you will learn when and where to find them on the refuge and status of each species. \nEducation portion of the program will be held in the Visitor Center Auditorium at the Merritt Island NWR. Following the presentation Dee & David will lead the group to areas of the Refuge to practice ID skills. Space Coast Audubon has a Special Use Permit for this program which enables our group to utilize some areas not open to the public. Protocols and requirements of the Permit will be shared during the session. Participants will not be allowed to play any recordings or audio sounds outside of the classroom. \n**What to Bring:** Binoculars\, refillable water bottle\, sun protection\n**Fee:** Program is free. The Field practice may include a visit to one of the Wildlife Drives (Bio Lab or Black Point) which have a fee of $10/vehicle. Free for America the Beautiful and Merritt Island NWR pass holders and Duck Stamp holder.\n**Logistics:** Restrooms and a water refill station are available inside the Visitor Center. Waterfowl ID and Birds of Central FL identification field guides are available for purchase at the Gift Shop inside the Visitor Center. Program participates receive a 10% discount on all purchases.

There should be plenty of parking there. \nRestrooms have a 50/50 chance of being open so HeadsUp. \nWe will check out this small park for waders\, warblers\, and waterfowl. There is a short paved trail and boardwalk that is mobility limited friendly and fairly easy walking. We may check some grassy/ vegetated areas for songbirds\, this could be wet/ muddy and contain fire ant nests so closed toe shoes are recommended. \nIf we don’t find much\, and there is time left we may check another area. \nLocated on the water’s edge at Sykes Creek and operated in partnership with the Veterans Memorial Center\, Inc.\, this 2.63-acre community river park houses a Veterans Memorial Museum and a spacious meeting room available for rental. A 335 ft lighted boardwalk and benches along the waterfront invite scenic viewing and fishing.

As the sun starts to set\, and nocturnal creatures are thinking about what prey could be on the menu for their evening meal\, we will embark on a hike through the woods. Along the trail the group will look and listen for owls. We will turn off our headlamps\, and put on our detective hats\, as we gather in an open air classroom to transform into nature sleuths. Our mission will be to solve the Great Owl Pellet Enigma by decoding the secrets hidden inside bones\, feathers\, fur\, insects and other indigestible materials. \nThis gathering promises to be an evening of mystery and discovery\, where the secrets of owl predation take center stage. \nLogistics:\nSams House officially closes at 5pm. Our event is an after hours private gathering. Please arrive by 4:45pm to allow time to park and check in. Once participants have checked in the front gate will be closed. Please notify the Hosts (direct message in Meetup or email Rob & Rochelle at info@spacecoastaudubon.org) if you need to arrive after 5pm. \nHow to prepare: Bring a headlamp\, water\, and insect repellent. Long sleeved shirts are suggested for mosquito protection. Hiking boots or closed toed shoes are strongly recommended as the trails have uneven surfaces. \nWhat’s Provided: Owl pellets\, dissection charts\, tweezers\, magnifying glasses\, and owl reference guides \nCost: Event is free. A donation to Sams House (Pine Island Preservation Society) is appreciated to cover the material costs. There will be a donation box at the entrance/exit of the classroom.

DESCRIPTION:Let’s paddle under the Full Beaver Moon this evening at Thousand Islands in Cocoa Beach. We’ll probably stay more out in the open areas to enjoy the moonbeams\, so this is a great trips for paddle boarders. Meet at Ramp Road Park and try to be in the water by 6:00. This is a popular spot for kayaking\, but hopefully there should be plenty of open parking spots in the evening. The park closes at 8 so we need to get out of the water before then.

From the odd choice of the common name for this family to establishing the definition of what makes a warbler a warbler\, the history of the human relationship with this group is almost as fascinating as the birds themselves.\nIn this program\, we will dive into the world of the warblers and the people who first noticed\, described and studied these wonderful creatures. During Joan’s first season as a “birder” in 1988 she was captivated by a fallout of these previously unimagined sprites along the shores of Lake Erie. She never looked back. DESCRIPTION:For ADVANCED PADDLERS only – advanced in ability not just in age. \nWe will paddle from the Seminole State Forest down Blackwater Creek to where it converges with the St Johns River. We will continue north (downstream) to Highbanks Marina (about 8.5 miles). There will be a 35 minute car shuttle from the Forest to Highbanks and another 35 minutes back to the start. The googlemaps search words for Highbanks is: Highbanks Marina & Camp Resort\, West Highbanks Road\, DeBary\, FL. \nWe will meet at the locked gate at Seminole State Forest-Bear Pond Trailhead. \nThere may be fallen trees and other obstacles where you will need to exit your boat and go over / under / around to continue down the creek. We will all help each other. If that sounds like an adventure then this is the trip for you. If not\, then there will be other trips to sign up for. Anyone with a non-traditional boat needs to check with me first. There will be scoot-overs\, dead tree limbs\, etc\, so if you are feeling lucky and plan to bring an inflatable then you will need to bring a repair kit and know how to use it. A BioBlitz is a communal citizen-science effort to record as many species within a designated location and time as possible. David Simpson and Dee Fairbanks-Simpson\, owners of Birding with David Simpson (professional bird guiding company) will share tips\, field examples\, and references on ways to utilize eBird to enhance your birding knowledge and field skills. \nIn the session we will explore features of the eBird APP using common scenarios. Some examples include: \n* A friend is visiting and she needs to tick Purple Gallinule off her list of birds she has seen in Florida. Where is she likely to find this bird in Brevard County?\n* You are traveling to St. Marks NWR in January and would like to know what birds are common at this location in the winter.\n* My friend ditched me to go chase flamingos. How did she know they were in the area and where to find them? \nThis is an intermediate level course and assumes attendees have a basic understanding of the eBird APP. To get the most out of the class\, please ensure you have installed the eBird APP\, downloaded at least one bird pack\, and added at least 2 bird observations to a checklist. We suggest checking for APP updates prior to the class. \nFollowing the instruction portion of the session we will travel to a nearby location for brief field practice. The class is being provided by professional birders who are donating their time. Our Space Coast Audubon chapter is offering the course for free. DESCRIPTION:Please note location change to Wilson’s Landing on the Wekiva River. \nKayak Junkies and Orlando Kayak Fishing Community are holding a Kayak & Swap Meet at Wilson’s Landing Park on Saturday\, October 21\, 2023 from 8am to 1pm. Yvette saw this on the Kayak Junkies Facebook page and thought it would be fun to invite our members to participate. We have all thought about upgrading our kayaks and here is a great chance to either on land or in the water try out different boats for possible purchase.\nI thought we could meet at 9 am\, unload boats\, and launch into the Wekiva river. Maybe paddle downstream to Katie’s Landing and back to Wilson’s Landing (about 3 miles round trip). We were going to practice some basic rescue skills but since the location changed this is no longer a good idea. The water is not deep enough and the vegatation is too plentiful.
