The room will be used for another group\, so we must finish the class on time and be outside by 9:45am. \nSo many shorebirds….how do I tell them apart? Join us for an Introduction to Shorebird Identification presented by David Simpson and Dee Fairbanks-Simpson\, owners of Birding with David Simpson (birding tours and environmental consulting). Anthony Sanchez\, Park Ranger\, will complement the training with information and some history about the Sebastian Inlet. \nFollowing the Shorebird ID class we will walk around the park to practice the skills learned. The areas visited will be dependent on weather and which sections have reopened after hurricane repairs. \nWhat to Bring: water\, snacks\, shoes that can get wet/muddy\, sunscreen\, binoculars (or let us know if you need a loaner pair) \nCourse Fee: Free (The instructors are donating their time. Tips are greatly appreciated). \nPark Fee: The venue is inside a State Park which charges a daily use fee. Cost is $8 per vehicle (up to 8 passengers) or $4 for an individual (in as car by themselves)\, or free for Florida State Park annual pass holders (or you can purchase an annual pass onsite). \nTraining Location:\nSebastian Inlet State Park (Indian River County Side)\nWe will meet inside the Fishing Museum on the south side of the bridge (Follow signs to campground entrance/Indian River County side) \nRestrooms are available throughout the park. There is a water bottle refill station just outside the fishing museum. Some of the sidewalks and paths were damaged during the hurricanes. An update will be provided closer to the event on the status of repairs and accessibility.

DESCRIPTION:This month’s Paddles ‘n Pints features alligator trapper Frank “Alligator” Robb. He’s been working with Crocodilians for a living for 28 years now. He has a biomedical degree and looks at the benefits of these animals to human health related problems. He’s been part of studies involving endocrinology toxicology\, parasitology\, tracking\, nesting and more. Alligator Robb is an appointed member of the Crocodile Specialist Group and sits on the global board for human Crocodile conflict. He works with\nthe nonprofit group\, Environmental Education Awareness\, Research\, Support and Services (EEARSS)\, to provide educational outreach and biodiversity studies on the Brevard County Environmentally Endangered Lands Properties. His presentation is sure to be interesting and informative. He is bringing one of his “pets” with him! \nWe will be collecting donations at the event to support EEARSS. Following the Shorebird ID class we will travel across the Max Brewer Bridge to areas along the intercoastal shoreline to observe shorebirds. Rob Lane will share birding tips\, highlight recent sightings and educate the group on identification methods. \nSams House has bathroom facilities\, a nature store in the pioneer house and fully accessible paved paths. The nature trails have some benches for guests who prefer to sit and take nature in. The property has a new filtered water refill station. Picnic tables are available if you would like to stay after the Bird Walk to sit and enjoy a snack. The picnic area is a great viewing spot for warblers\, kinglets and creatures visiting the native plant gardens. \nPlease bring: water\, binoculars\, bug repellent\, and shoes that can get muddy or wet. If the weather is cooler\, a jacket is recommended.

DESCRIPTION:Join Megan Berg for a walk Tuesday\, January 31\, 2023\, at Jetty Park in Port Canaveral. There is a fee to drive into Jetty Park – $15 per day per car or an annual pass for Brevard Residents for $25. **Passes can not be purchased at the gate\, they must be purchased ahead of time online at** https://www.portcanaveral.com/Recreation/Jetty-Park-Beach-Pier \nFrom the GFBWT website: This park’s jetty is the last land ships pass as they leave Port Canaveral\, headed out to sea. At the north end of the park\, check the ship turning basin from the jetty pier. The turning basin provides refuge for the occasional Common Eider and Surf Scoter in the fall and winter\, as well as Common Loons\, Double-crested Cormorants\, and Red-breasted Mergansers. Shorebirds such as Ruddy Turnstones and Willets are common\, and Purple Sandpipers are recorded in the winter. Large flocks of Royal\, Sandwich and Forster’s Terns\, and Black Skimmers loaf on the beach\, and Reddish Egret\, Roseate Spoonbill\, American Avocet\, and Lesser Black-backed Gull are noted regularly. The site is renowned for attracting rarities; Iceland\, Sabine’s\, and Franklin’s Gull have all been recorded as well as Arctic Tern\, and Razorbill. Check the channel markers for roosting Brown Booby. Scope offshore for seabirds such as Northern Gannet and watch for Parasitic and Pomarine Jaegers chasing gulls and terns. A small hammock on-site can be good for songbirds during migration. While walking along the fishing pier look for young sea turtles feeding close to the pilings and dolphins are often spotted close to shore.\nThis site has 232 species reported in eBird overall with over 117 species so far in January.\nWe will meet at 7:30 am at the parking lot near the flag pole and restrooms.

DESCRIPTION:We’ll launch from Sendler Education Outpost off N Courtenay Parkway in the Merritt Island National Refuge. This is an easy paddle around a lagoon in the Refuge. The Outpost has plenty of parking\, but not where the launch site is. Go to the end of the road in the Outpost and there is a loop with a couple launch sites similar to the picture above. Drop off your craft\, then park up the road closer to the outpost building and pavilion – it’s a short walk back. This is a remote area and there are no rental opportunities here. We’ll meet there at 9:30 to be in the water by 9:45.

DESCRIPTION:Join Megan Berg for a bird walk at 7:00 AM Wednesday\, January 25\, 2023\, at Lori Wilson Park in Cocoa Beach. \nWe bird on the beach from Lori Wilson Park at 1500 N Atlantic Avenue\nCocoa Beach in the north parking lot. We will also go over to the beach and look for shore and sea birds and gulls. Following the beach walk we will bird on the new boardwalk at the Mansfield Maritime Hammock. \nThis 32.43-acre regional beach park featuring a maritime hammock is a popular site for events and group gatherings. The maritime hammock allows visitors to experience Florida’s natural coastline. Beach attractions include 3 pavilions along a 1\,000-foot boardwalk\, 6 dune crossovers\, seasonal lifeguards\, and surf fishing. Restrooms\, outdoor showers\, and parking lots are conveniently located on both the north and south sides of the hammock. Two medium pavilions\, grills\, and a playground are located on the north side. This is the perfect trip to practice\, or develop\, your identification of birds found on beaches and shorelines while enjoying the lovely water views. \nPark Entrance Fee: $10 per vehicle. $20 annual inlet parks pass. Free for Handicapped and Disabled Veteran registered vehicles. \nSmyrna Dunes Park is a 184-acre inlet park located along the southern shoreline of Ponce de Leon Inlet. The park has over 2 miles of wide\, elevated\, handicapped-accessible boardwalk capped with recycled lumber that is both comfortable and durable. Multiple scenic overlooks allow breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean\, the Indian River and Ponce de Leon Inlet. The park property is jointly owned by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and the State of Florida\, Department of Environmental Protection. Volusia County manages the park under leases it maintains with these federal and state agencies. \nSpace Coast Audubon is delighted to welcome Gina and Adam Kent to the Space Coast Birding Weekend field trip series. Gina and Adam have been regular presenters and leaders of the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival in the past. She grew up in Wisconsin and received a B.S. in Wildlife and Biology at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 1998. Upon graduation\, she served as a field biologist on various studies of birds\, reptiles and amphibians\, small mammals and invasive plants from New Mexico to New York and Missouri to Australia. Once hired as a seasonal field biologist on ARCI’s Short-tailed Hawk project\, Gina became hooked on field studies of birds in Florida. Gina earned her M.S. degree in Biology from Georgia Southern University in 2004 with important research on the stop-over ecology\, habitat associations\, and parasites of Swallow-tailed Kites. Gina’s field duties include finding and monitoring nests\, climbing nest trees\, trapping\, radio tagging\, and tracking birds as part of the organization’s studies of nesting ecology\, habitat selection\, demography\, migration\, and conservation biology for over a dozen species. Gina writes proposals and reports\, manages telemetry datasets\, conducts GIS and data analyses\, as well as hires\, trains\, and supervises field technicians. \n**Adam Kent**\nAdam is known by many as the sparrow aficionado. He has guided trips from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego and many points between. An Anhinga sparked Adam’s passion for birds when he was a young kid. Since then\, a love of nature has led Adam on various pursuits including assessing sites for the Great Florida Birding Trail\, working as Florida’s first Scrub-Jay Conservation Coordinator\, and serving as President of the Florida Ornithological Society. He also enjoys travel and sharing his enthusiasm for nature. One of Adam’s birding highlights was making recordings that led to the description of a new species of bird in Mexico\, the Nava’s Wren. He also had fun competing in two Birding Rally Challenges in Peru. DESCRIPTION:For this paddle we’ll stay local and explore Thousand Islands in Cocoa Beach. We’ve done this one before\, and it’s a favorite. There are lots of mangrove trails to wind through\, along with open water for those less adventurous (or with longer kayaks/paddleboards)! Meet at Ramp Road Park at 9 to launch. We should all be in the water by 9:30. After the paddle\, we’ll go to BeachFly Brewing Company for lunch and a cold drink.

Space Coast Audubon is providing support through promotion\, hosting\, and field trip leader involvement. \n**TRIP C: Fellsmere Grade Recreation Area (Big Sit)**\nTrip Leader: David Simpson\, Birding with David Simpson\nSaturday – Big Sit at Fellsmere Grade Recreation Area (0630 – 1200)\nAdvanced Registration is not required. Unlimited# of participants. You can pop in\, stay for a while\, or join for hours. It’s up to you. \nThe Big Sit is an activity where participants sit in one area for a period of time to observe how many birds can be observed while sitting still. Come by any time\, bring a chair\, and stay as long as you want. You can join any time between 0630am until 12pm. \n73 species were seen on previous Big Sit in fall 2022. Spoonbills likely nesting nearby. Vermilion Flycatcher has been around a lot this winter. Really interesting opportunity to see a lot of birds without having to move. \nPlease bring a chair\, binoculars\, snacks\, and water/drinks. \nThe Fellsmere Grade Recreation area is 6.5 miles from where you depart Babcock St SE and travel down Fellsmere Grade Rd. Restrooms are available at the two boat ramps along the way. The first is next to the Crew team storage units (on right shortly after you get onto Fellsmere Grade Road)\, the second is on the left at the Headwaters Lake Boat Ramp. **The restroom near the Bit Sit area is not maintained\, it’s very gross and unsanitary.** Bring hand sanitizer and your own toilet tissue if you chose to use this restroom. \nLogistics: Follow Fellsmere Grade Road all the way (west) until it dead ends at the boat ramp (6.5 miles from where you turn off Babcock Road). Drive until you can’t drive any further without going into the water…you’ve arrived. Park in the dirt lot next to the bridge. We’ll “sit” near the canal next to the boat ramp. Originally from Palm Beach County\, Emily is a Florida native with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science from Broward College in Davie\, FL. Her work with Indian River Lagoon Aquatic Preserves currently focuses on estuarine ecology including upland and lagoon connectivity\, horseshoe crab and diamondback terrapin population studies\, as well as restoring and promoting the importance of shoreline habitat. Her career is devoted to coastal habitat health with experience in mangrove fringe and oyster reef restoration\, water quality monitoring\, sea turtle nesting surveys\, coral husbandry and micro-fragmentation\, reef fish surveys\, seagrass monitoring\, as well as developing and delivering outreach and citizen science programs to a wide variety of audience. Emily spends most of her free time surfing\, but also enjoys freediving\, sailing\, hiking and being outdoors.

Space Coast Audubon is providing support through promotion\, hosting\, and field trip leader involvement. \n**TRIP B: TM Goodwin Broadmoor Tract (Special Use Permit)**\nTrip Leader: David Simpson\, Birding with David Simpson\n07:00 – 15:00 Meet at Fellsmere Grade Recreation Area (dirt parking lot next to the Boat Ramp)\n**Bring lunch** – we’ll be birding for nearly 8 hours! Possibly 100 species. Lot and lots of ducks\, shorebirds\, wading birds\, Gray-headed Swamphen\, American white pelicans\, and many more. \nThis field trip is available by Special Use Permit; therefore\, the area will not be open to the general public. The entrance gate will be closed and locked after we pass through. See the Trip Leader to get the gate code if you need to depart prior to the end of the trip. \n*****If this is your first trip to the property please allow plenty of extra time to reach the parking lot by 0700am. From Babcock Road it is 6.5 miles to the parking area where we meet. It can take up to 17 minutes from the time you leave Babcock St SE and travel down Fellsmere Grade Rd. It is a dirt road and often bumpy\, so cars go slow.** \n**Allow enough time to stop to use the restroom at the boat ramp along the way\, if needed. The entrance gate will be locked after our group enters\, so late arrivals cannot be accommodated.**** \nLogistics: Follow Fellsmere Grade Road all the way (west) until it dead ends at the boat ramp (6.5 miles from where you turn off Babcock Road). Drive until you can’t drive any further without going into the water…you’ve arrived. Park in the dirt lot next to the bridge. While you’re driving down Fellsmere Grade Road you will pass two boat ramps. I strongly suggest using the first restroom (shortly after you leave Babcock Road\, on the right near the Crew team storage buildings). The bathroom near our meeting area is not maintained and really disgusting (bring hand sanitizer and a nose plug if you plan to use it). There are no bathrooms once we depart from the parking lot and cross the bridge.\nThe trip is primarily driving\, with periodic stops for photos and to observe through scopes\, so the entire trip is suitable for anyone with limited mobility. \nWe will have a picnic lunch in our cars part way through the trip.\nPlease bring: Lunch\, water/drinks\, bug repellent\, sunscreen\, binoculars\, and hearty snacks. The trip leader will check out a radio to each car to ensure everyone report sightings\, learn about the species seen\, and to notify the group of stops. SUMMARY:Loxahatchee River Trip Weekday
DESCRIPTION:THIS TRIP IS FOR VERY EXPERIENCED KAYAKERS ONLY.\nThis is the same trip as Saturday\, January 7\, but this one will be during the week for those who can do that. After doing the January 7 paddle\, I’m changing this to a paddle to go to the 2nd dam and back. However\, if anyone wants to do the entire river\, make arrangements with fellow paddlers ahead of the trip. Don’t do it on your own! IF YOU WANT TO TRAVERSE THE ENTIRE RIVER\, YOU’LLL NEED TO SHUTTLE VEHICLES TO THE STATE PARK BEFORE KAYAKING. IT TAKES WELL OVER AN HOUR TO SHUTTLE CARS AND GET BACK TO RIVERBEND. We’ll start our paddle from Riverbend Park at 10:00\, so plan accordingly. For those of us going only to the second dam\, we’ll turn around then and paddle against the current back to Riverbend. You’ll still get to paddle over the first dam if you want to try it. Those that plan to keep going will continue down the river to Jonathan Dickinson State Park where your cars will be parked.\nThe state park is 35 minutes away and there is an entrance fee and a parking fee\, so we need to keep this in mind when shuttling vehicles.

If you were on the loxahatche trip you got a taste of this. Imagine doing it on your own! \nBob started racing at the age of 8\, including dinghies\, crew\, sailboats\, ocean shells\, and surfskis. He and his wife have paddled and camped across the country. He became involved in expedition racing with Watertribe.org and won the Class 1 record in 2018. He is the owner of MidFlorida Paddlesports where he sells\, repairs\, and gives demonstrations and instruction on kayaking.

SUMMARY:Sams House at Pine Island (Two Part Field Trip - History & Community Science)
DESCRIPTION:Travel back in time while exploring nature at Sams House and the Pine Island Conservation Area. From Ice Age animals to Native Americans to early pioneers\, Pine Island Conservation Area has a rich history. \nThis field activity is comprised of two parts: \n**Part 1: Sams House (0830-0945)**\nThe Naturalists will share a bit of history as we explore the nature trails and interactive exhibits highlighting Pine Island’s current and past inhabitants. The property is part of the Environmentally Endangered Lands (EEL) Program. We’ll be looking for birds\, butterflies\, insects and observe the native plant gardens. \nSams House has bathroom facilities\, a nature store in the pioneer house and fully accessible paved paths. The nature trails have some benches for guests who prefer to sit and take nature in. \nFrom Sams House we will consolidate vehicles and travel 3.6 miles to Pine Island Conservation Area. The parking space near the hiking trail can only accommodate 4-5 vehicles. (0945-1000) \n**Part 2: Pine Island Conservation Area (1000-1120)**\nThis 880-acre conservation area provides access to the trailhead 0.5 mile from main entrance leading to over 7 miles of trails. The property includes pine flatwoods\, Saltmarsh habitats\, cabbage palm hammocks\, mangrove forests and marshes fringing the Indian River Lagoon.\nOur trip leader will guide us on a hike to enjoy the habitat and observe wildlife. The hike will be on dirt and brush paths with uneven surfaces.\nDuring this part of the trip we will focus on community science\, striving to add observations to eBird and iNaturalist. \nTravel Back to Sams House (1120-1130)\nEveryone is welcome to join our group picnic lunch after the field trips. \nPlease bring: water\, binoculars\, bug repellent\, and shoes that can get muddy or wet. If the weather is cooler\, a jacket may be useful. If you plan to join for lunch\, bring your lunch and a drink. Let us know if you need to borrow a pair of binoculars.

SUMMARY:Turkey Creek Paddle
DESCRIPTION:Great trip for beginners or anyone that needs to rent a kayak! We’ll launch from Paddling Paradise\, 4220 Dixie Hwy NE\, Palm Bay. You can rent a kayak there\, but please call ahead to reserve a craft. Launch around noon\, and we’ll be on the water by 12:15. We’ll travel up Turkey Creek through the Sanctuary to the dam and back. There may be some manatees\, dolphins\, turtles\, and possibly alligators along the way! It’s a nice slow paddle\, generally smooth waters\, but maybe some downed timber to navigate. I’ll need an organizer for this trip\, so let me know if you can do it!
