DESCRIPTION:Float Plan for Econ River – Saturday April 1\, 2023\nMeet at 8:30 am at the Little Big Econ Canoe Launch at Hwy 419 Bridge: 3801 Willingham Rd\, Oviedo FL 32766.\nThere is a bit of a trek to the river from the parking spots\, so please bring your wheels (if you have them) and we will help each other carry the boats down.\nWe will unload the boats and shuttle all of the cars to the Snow Hill Road Bridge\, County Road 13\, Oviedo\, FL. Drive a few cars back to the launch point. Yvette will watch the boats while we do the shuttle.\nPaddle downstream. It will take about 3.5 hours to paddle with a few stops. There are no traditional restrooms at either end.- FYI\nWe will see lots of gators. While there are no regulations to prevent you from bringing an inflatable\, I would not advise it. Please see Darryl if you need to rent a kayak.\nBring a life jacket for each person\, a whistle for each boat\, plenty of water\, hat\, sunscreen\, and sunglasses. DESCRIPTION:**En Plein Air Drawing Class**\nLearn to sketch nature in real life! This is a lesson on how to draw natural items from direct observation. After the teacher demo\, participants will practice with paper and pencil before heading outdoors to draw. Bring your favorite sketchbook/drawing paper\, graphite pencils and erasers. Also bring color pencils\, watercolor paints\, markers if you wish to add color later. The instructors and host will have a limited supply of paper and some colored pencils for anyone who doesn’t bring their own. \nPlease bring: sun hat\, refillable water bottle\, sunscreen\, folding chair\, and snacks. If you have a Florida State Park pass\, please check the expiration date and don’t forget to bring it. There is a water refill station next to the restrooms. If you own a camera\, you may find it useful to take photos to capture details of your subject you might want to add later on. \nBio:\nJessie Sodano is an experienced art teacher and birder living in Brevard County for the past 34 years. She has a Master’s degree in Art Education from Florida State University and has taught art at all levels in the public schools. She currently teaches photography and digital art with Brevard Virtual school. She loves drawing en plein air on her many travels. She lives in Melbourne where she enjoys spending time in the garden\, and with pets\, family and friends. \n**Please plan to arrive at the park by 8:15am\, to allow adequate time to pay entrance fee/show your State Park pass\, park\, and check in before the class begin at 8:30am**. The room will be used for another group\, so we will need to wrap up instruction by 9:40am before going outside to practice. \nCourse Fee: Free \nPark Fee: The venue is inside a State Park which charges a daily use fee. DESCRIPTION:**** Please read special registration process for this field trip****\nLimited or reduced mobility guests will receive priority booking prior to other reservations being confirmed. Tour America’s first National Wildlife Refuge by tram. Travel back in time to 1903 when President Theodore Roosevelt’s executive order designated the island as the nation’s first national wildlife refuge for the protection of nesting birds. \nPelican Island NWR is home to thousands of species of wildlife and a place for birds to rest and refuel during spring and fall migrations. The upland habitat is home to gopher tortoises\, bobcats\, and snakes. \nThe tram and tour leaders will meet us at the Welcome Center near the bathrooms. **Please be there by 7:45 AM**. This is the only bathroom on the refuge available for use. The tour lasts about 2 hours and will take us to 3 different areas on the Refuge. At each stop the Refuge volunteers will provide information about the history of NWR’s and education about local wildlife. No walking is required\, however there will be the option to step off the tram at each stop for those interested. \nOne of our junior birders\, Melina\, will serve as our greeter. George Thomas will be our gird guide. Limited mobility members can bring a guest and will receive first priority for themselves and their guest. We have two trams and the spaces are limited to total number of seats. PLEASE indicate when registering if you are a limited mobility/special assistance guest. This includes those who can only walk short distance\, anyone who walks with use of cane/walker/wheelchair\, or participants with breathing conditions. PLEASE let us know by replying to the registration question if we should include you in the limited mobility group. This group will receive priority registration for two weeks and all other registrations will be moved to the waitlist. DESCRIPTION:**Roseate Spoonbill: Optics and Images**\nDozens of state-imperiled roseate spoonbills and tricolored herons join snowy and great egrets to nest each year at Stick Marsh Critical Wildlife Area (CWA). Stick Marsh includes two tree islands in the St. John’s Water Management Area’s Stick Marsh/Farm 13 Reservoir in Fellsmere. At sunset\, thousands of wading birds fly into the islands to roost.\nStick Marsh CWA is adjacent to T.M. Goodwin Wildlife Management Area\, a site along the Great Florida Birding Trail. It is easily viewed from shore. The islands are closed to entry year-round\, and the in-water buffer is closed seasonally to protect nesting birds during the breeding season.\nRoseate Spoonbills and their young can be view from land while looking across to the two Stick Marsh islands. Nesting season is a beautiful photography opportunity. \n** We will meet in the dirt parking lot and walk across the bridge. For those with heavy photography equipment or special walking assistance/reduced mobility needs\, you can park your vehicle across the bridge\, near the viewing area. This space is limited to a few cars.** \n**Birding by Chair & Camera (bring your own chair):**\nThis field trip will include the opportunity to explore use of optics and photography equipment while enjoying the view of the nesting birds. Participants will have the opportunity to try out several different styles\, brands and types of binoculars. Birders can also learn about digi-scoping techniques and test out scope adapters. Photographers are encouraged to share tips while capturing images of the nesting birds. **Bring a folding chair**\, a beverage\, and your curiosity to learn about optics and equipment to observe and capture wildlife images. \nDirections: This can be a confusing place to locate as multiple properties are all adjoined (TM Goodwin\, Fellsmere Grade Recreation Area\, etc). Coming from the north\, go PAST (south) St. Sebastian River Preserve State Park on Babcock Road. Cross the canal and turn right (west) on Fellsmere Grade Road. **Travel 6.5 miles until the road dead ends into a park lot next to a bridge.** \n**** You will pass 2 boats ramps along the way. Both have restrooms and I strongly encourage you to use one of these\, as the one near Fellsmere Recreation Area isn’t maintained and is absolutely disgusting. ****

See highlights of this spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Centre. \nThe Galápagos Islands area situated in the Pacific Ocean some 1\,000 km from the Ecuadorian coast. This archipelago and its immense marine reserve is known as the unique ‘living museum and showcase of evolution’. Its geographical location at the confluence of three ocean currents makes it one of the richest marine ecosystems in the world. Ongoing seismic and volcanic activity reflects the processes that formed the islands. The annual Open House showcases the many activities the island can be used for such as camping\, bird watching\, hiking\, kayaking and more. Advance registration on the Satellite Beach Recreation website is requested to reserve a place on the boat to be transported to the island. There is a $4 self-pay entrance fee – bring the correct change. We will unload. At least one person will stay with the boats. The rest of us will drive ALL of the cars to Access Point #3: Smith Creek Landing in North Peninsula State Park. Leave most of the cars and car-pool back to Access Point #1. The address for this is: North Peninsula State Park\, 40 High Bridge Rd\, Ormond Beach\, FL 32176 \nPaddle 6.5 miles. This is downstream\, but there is not much of a current. There should be white pelicans to see near the end of the paddle. There is no shade on this trip. It will be in the salt marshes.\nPlease bring s broad-brimmed hat or a note from your dermatologist. DESCRIPTION:**Florida’s Native Bees: Biology\, Identification and Conservation**\nSarah Anderson (PhD Candidate) will introduce our group to some of the most common and notable Florida native bee species\, including some interesting specialist bees. Her presentation will focus on where to find native bees\, how to identify them\, and steps we can take as nature enthusiasts to help conserve these bees. Following the program we will have an opportunity to get up close and personal with bees both in a remote laboratory and exploring the Sams House property. \nThe program will include a hands-on opportunity to learn about native bee biology\, search for them in the gardens and trails\, examine specimens under a microscope\, and participate in adding observations into iNaturalist to contribute to community science. \nFlorida is home to more than 300 species of native bees\, of which 29 of those are endemic. DESCRIPTION:Join Megan Berg for a walk Tuesday\, February 21\, 2023\, at Jetty Park in Port Canaveral. There is a fee to drive into Jetty Park – $15 per day per car or an annual pass for Brevard Residents for $25. **Passes can not be purchased at the gate\, they must be purchased ahead of time online at** https://www.portcanaveral.com/Recreation/Jetty-Park-Beach-Pier \nFrom the GFBWT website: This park’s jetty is the last land ships pass as they leave Port Canaveral\, headed out to sea. At the north end of the park\, check the ship turning basin from the jetty pier. The turning basin provides refuge for the occasional Common Eider and Surf Scoter in the fall and winter\, as well as Common Loons\, Double-crested Cormorants\, and Red-breasted Mergansers. Shorebirds such as Ruddy Turnstones and Willets are common\, and Purple Sandpipers are recorded in the winter. Large flocks of Royal\, Sandwich and Forster’s Terns\, and Black Skimmers loaf on the beach\, and Reddish Egret\, Roseate Spoonbill\, American Avocet\, and Lesser Black-backed Gull are noted regularly. The site is renowned for attracting rarities; Iceland\, Sabine’s\, and Franklin’s Gull have all been recorded as well as Arctic Tern\, and Razorbill. Check the channel markers for roosting Brown Booby. Scope offshore for seabirds such as Northern Gannet and watch for Parasitic and Pomarine Jaegers chasing gulls and terns. A small hammock on-site can be good for songbirds during migration. While walking along the fishing pier look for young sea turtles feeding close to the pilings and dolphins are often spotted close to shore.\nThis site has 232 species reported in eBird overall with over 139 species in February.\nWe will meet at 4:00 pm at the parking lot near the flag pole and restrooms.

DESCRIPTION:We will celebrate Presidents’ Day on the Sebastian River. \nMeet at Canoe Launch Cove at 8:30 am.\n9800 Canoe Launch Cove\, Sebastian\, FL 32958­ \nWe will paddle downstream (approximately 6 miles) to Dale Wimbrow Park\, 11805 Roseland Road\, Sebastian\, FL 32958­ \nThis trip will require a shuttling of vehicles/people (not boats). We will meet at the Canoe Cove Launch. Unload all boats; Leave a few people inflating / building their boats. Shuttle most of the cars to Dale Wimbrow Park ( 7 minute drive)\, drive a minimum of cars back to launch. Paddle downstream. Shuttle people back to pick up remaining vehicles. This way no one has to transport an extra kayak. \nBring lots of water\, floppy hat\, sunscreen\, snacks/lunch\, whistle\, and PFD. If you need help unloading/loading your boat please just ask. Contact Darryl if you need to rent a boat. This trip would be appropriate for inflatable kayaks\, canoes\, and SUPs. The river is very narrow in the beginning with fallen trees and stumps\, but it widens out a bit soon and is a very enjoyable paddle. How long will it take? It depends on how fast we paddle. If we take a couple of breaks I estimate 3 hours. We will put the slower paddlers in the front of the group to set the pace. \nPlease check the Meetup site the night before the trip. DESCRIPTION:Join Megan Berg for a walk Monday\, February 20\, 2023\, at Leroy Wright Park in Cocoa. \nFrom the GFBWT website: This Brevard County park on the broad St. Johns River floodplain provides a vantage of the river to look for waders like Wood Storks and Little Blue Herons\, migratory ducks such as Blue-winged Teal\, and shorebirds like Black-necked Stilts. Sandhill Cranes\, Limpkins and Crested Caracara are regularly encountered and Snail Kites have been recorded. Other species to look for include Anhinga\, Pied-billed Grebe (winter)\, Sora (winter) and Glossy Ibis. Look for American Alligators and River Otters. Bird the park’s waterfront\, but also check the gravel boat launch area (Leroy Wright Recreation Area) across the road (on the north side of SR 520) for a different\, quieter view. Boat traffic is busy on weekends (including airboats)\, so for a quieter visit head to this site on a weekday.\nThis site has 187 species reported in eBird overall.\nWe will meet at 8:00 am at the parking lot near the Leroy Wright boat launch.

DESCRIPTION:Please help maintain the Audubon Native Plant Garden that SCAS created at the end of 2018 as part of an Audubon in Action Grant. We also have another Native Plant Garden at the Rock Springs entrance that could always use some attention. And we have a lot of nonnative plants that need to be cut down\, pulled out\, and removed if that’s more to your liking. \nHere’s a great opportunity for students looking for Community Service hours supporting a local nonprofit\, individuals interested in gardening\, and naturalists able to help with invasive plant management and trail maintenance. You can spend as much time as you like\, from fifteen minutes to three hours. \n**What We’ll Do** – Dig out small Brazilian Pepper trees\, cut branches away from the trails\, do trail improvements\, cut back vines\, or weed the gardens. We need volunteers to help maintain this beautiful green space. We are always looking for people to help with maintaining the beauty of our gardens and property. Let us know how you would like to help. \n**What to Bring** – Work gloves\, loppers\, shovel\, and/or saw. Wear sneakers or work shoes\, long sleeves and pants\, and a hat. DESCRIPTION:Let’s paddle the St Johns River. We will meet at Camp Holly to unload boats at 8 am. Please bring $3 cash for the boat ramp usage fee. We will start the car shuttle to Lake Washington Park at 8:30 am. We will drive ALL of the cars to Lake Washington Park (6000 Lake Washington Rd\, Melbourne\, FL 32934)\, and drive the fewest number of vehicles back to Camp Holly. Remember that the current flows north\, so we will paddle south against the current to Lake Sawgrass\, turn around and paddle with the current to Lake Washington Park. Please know that Lake Washington can get very rough if the wind is blowing. We will stick near the eastern edge of the lake. The journey will be 7 miles\, so please make sure you can physically handle that distance before signing up for this trip.

DESCRIPTION:Shorebird ID Class (Encore – Class 2)\nItinerary: 8:15am (arrive at park)\nClass Time: 8:30-9:30am\nPractice Time in the Field (at the State Park): 9:30-11:15am \n**Please plan to arrive at the park by 8:15am\, to allow adequate time to pay entrance fee/show your State Park pass\, park\, and check in before the class begin at 8:30am**. The room will be used for another group\, so we must finish the class on time and be outside by 9:45am. \nSo many shorebirds….how do I tell them apart? Join us for an Introduction to Shorebird Identification presented by David Simpson and Dee Fairbanks-Simpson\, owners of Birding with David Simpson (birding tours and environmental consulting). Anthony Sanchez\, Park Ranger\, will complement the training with information and some history about the Sebastian Inlet. \nFollowing the Shorebird ID class we will walk around the park to practice the skills learned. The areas visited will be dependent on weather and which sections have reopened after hurricane repairs. \nWhat to Bring: water\, snacks\, shoes that can get wet/muddy\, sunscreen\, binoculars (or let us know if you need a loaner pair) \nCourse Fee: Free (The instructors are donating their time. Tips are greatly appreciated). \nPark Fee: The venue is inside a State Park which charges a daily use fee. Cost is $8 per vehicle (up to 8 passengers) or $4 for an individual (in as car by themselves)\, or free for Florida State Park annual pass holders (or you can purchase an annual pass onsite). \nTraining Location:\nSebastian Inlet State Park (Indian River County Side)\nWe will meet inside the Fishing Museum on the south side of the bridge (Follow signs to campground entrance/Indian River County side) \nRestrooms are available throughout the park. There is a water bottle refill station just outside the fishing museum. Some of the sidewalks and paths were damaged during the hurricanes. An update will be provided closer to the event on the status of repairs and accessibility.

SUMMARY:Paddles 'n Pints with Gator Robb
DESCRIPTION:This month’s Paddles ‘n Pints features alligator trapper Frank “Alligator” Robb. He’s been working with Crocodilians for a living for 28 years now. He has a biomedical degree and looks at the benefits of these animals to human health related problems. He’s been part of studies involving endocrinology toxicology\, parasitology\, tracking\, nesting and more. Alligator Robb is an appointed member of the Crocodile Specialist Group and sits on the global board for human Crocodile conflict. He works with\nthe nonprofit group\, Environmental Education Awareness\, Research\, Support and Services (EEARSS)\, to provide educational outreach and biodiversity studies on the Brevard County Environmentally Endangered Lands Properties. His presentation is sure to be interesting and informative. He is bringing one of his “pets” with him! \nWe will be collecting donations at the event to support EEARSS. The training will be complemented by Emily Surmont\, FL Department of Environmental Protection\, sharing highlights on the important part horseshoe crabs play in the ecology of coastal communities. \nDuring February shorebirds sometimes share the shoreline with horsecrabs that come onshore to mate and lay eggs. Following the Shorebird ID class we will travel across the Max Brewer Bridge to areas along the intercoastal shoreline to observe shorebirds. There are no restrooms at the field practice locations. However\, there is a bathroom at the boat ramp at the end of the Max Brewer Bridge. The field practice will include walking on non-paved\, uneven surfaces and we will walk along the shoreline in wet/sandy areas.

The seven-mile journey starts just below the springs and follows the spring run through the heart of the Juniper Prairie Wilderness to a take-out off SR 19\, well before the run empties into the St. Johns River at Lake George. DESCRIPTION:Join the Naturalist Staff of Sams House to look and listen for birds around the park. From beginner to expert\, all levels of birders are welcome. Rob Lane will share birding tips\, highlight recent sightings and educate the group on identification methods. \nSams House has bathroom facilities\, a nature store in the pioneer house and fully accessible paved paths. The nature trails have some benches for guests who prefer to sit and take nature in. The property has a new filtered water refill station. Picnic tables are available if you would like to stay after the Bird Walk to sit and enjoy a snack. The picnic area is a great viewing spot for warblers\, kinglets and creatures visiting the native plant gardens. \nPlease bring: water\, binoculars\, bug repellent\, and shoes that can get muddy or wet. If the weather is cooler\, a jacket is recommended.
