We’ll launch from Paddling Paradise\, 4220 Dixie Hwy NE\, Palm Bay. You can rent a kayak there\, but please call ahead to reserve a craft. It’s an easy launch area\, so we should be in the water by 9:45. We’ll travel up Turkey Creek through the Sanctuary to the dam and back. There may be some manatees\, dolphins\, turtles\, and possibly alligators along the way! Prior to this\, for 5 years he was a consulting biologist with an engineering/consulting firm: Post\, Buckley\, Schuh and Jernigan\, inc. Mark’s primary duties include managing the Orlando Easterly Wetlands Program – a large scale constructed treatment system and has been involved in numerous water quality enhancement projects and the design of smaller constructed wetland treatment systems.\nMark is licensed as commercial aquatic herbicide applicator\, certified prescribed burn manager\, commercial drone pilot and winner of the National Wetlands Award in 2018 along with a Congressional Service Award for his work in wetlands. SUMMARY:Paddling St. Lucie Inlet Preserve State Park
DESCRIPTION:This classic Florida barrier island is accessible only by boat\, and it is worth the ride. A boardwalk takes visitors through mangrove forests and hammocks of live oaks\, cabbage palms\, paradise trees and wild limes to a neatly preserved Atlantic beach. The preserve is a favorite of nature students interested in learning about the native flora and fauna of Florida barrier islands. The kayak trail is 4.2 miles long and takes a leisurely three hours to complete\, meandering through mangrove estuaries and maritime hammocks where you can see the plant and animals that make their home at the park. Wading birds such as blue heron\, white ibis and snowy egrets are common along the trail\, and there is a good chance you will view osprey flying overhead. We’ll stop at the south beach access point to park your kayak for a short walk over to the beautiful park beach.\nLaunch from Cove Road Park – parking is very limited. The event fee covers state park entrance fees.

We will launch at the East Trailhead and paddle north on Blackwater Creek to Lake Norris. \n——- from The St Johns Water River Management website:\nhttps://www.sjrwmd.com/lands/recreation/lake-norris/\nLake Norris is a spectacular darkwater lake and the Lake Norris Conservation Area was purchased to protect the extensive hardwood swamp that lies on the western shore of the lake and the shoreline of Black Water Creek\, a major tributary of the Wekiva River. The upland portion of the conservation area consists of improved pasture\, scrub and planted pine.\nOne of the special highlights of this property is its high concentration of osprey nests. The cypress that ring the outer perimeter of this blackwater lake boasts one of the highest concentrations of nesting osprey in central Florida. Staff at the Boy Scout Camp located on the northern shore of the lake have reported counting more than 100 active nests in the cypress trees that ring the lake. \nMore details to follow.

DESCRIPTION:We will be travelling West this time to paddle the Middle Section – Paddling Trail of the Lower Hillsborough Wilderness Preserve. We will meet at 9:30 am at John B Sargeant Sr Park\, 12702 US-301\, Thonotosassa\, FL 33592. We will unload boats and then start the car shuttle at 9:45 am to Wilderness Park Trout Creek Site –> Trout Crk Pk\, Thonotosassa\, FL 33592. This is the Saturday of Easter weekend for your planning purposes. \nFrom their website:\nThe middle section from Sargeant Park to Morris Bridge to Trout Creek Park\, about 7.5 miles\, is a popular section of river\, with easy to moderate paddling – a few pullovers may be encountered depending on water level. Excellent for wildlife viewing. Tree canopy provides shade. Only one parking fee is needed for these three parks\,\nthe others have separate fees.

He brought his beloved Bucktail canoe\, built by the already-famous J. Henry Rushton of Canton\, New York. Sears\, pen-named Nessmuk\, was the most famous outdoor writer of his day\, and his 1885 series of articles entitled “The Bucktail in Florida” made him and Rushton even more celebrated than ever. A few years ago\, more than a century after Nessmuk’s subtropical adventure\, Dr. Grace found a small wooden canoe and quickly realized its historical significance. Located near the site of Nessmuk’s travels\, after restoring it\, Michael took it back to the very same places Nessmuk paddled so long ago. This presentation will be a photographic journey through this little canoe’s long history and a stirring biography of Nessmuk\, Rushton\, and those around them. \n**Presented by:** Dr. Michael Grace \n**About the Presenter:** Since 1999\, Dr. Michael Grace has served as faculty in Biological Sciences and as an administrator for the College of Science and then the College of Engineering and Science. A behavioral neuroscientist\, his work has centered on vision and related sensory systems in whales\, snakes\, giant marine fish\, and other fascinating animals with the goals of understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms of vision and developing “biomimetic” artificial sensors. Dr. Grace also built and ran Florida Tech’s High-Resolution Microscopy Center. Away from campus\, he has been a lifelong outdoorsman and collector and restorer of historic small boats. Widely published on the history of wooden boats\, he currently serves as President of the international Wooden Canoe Heritage Association\, a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and study of wooden boat history. |

Why not just shoot on auto?\n* Composition\, what it is and how to think about it\n* Why animal behavior matters when it comes to a good photo\n* Should I edit my photos?\n* Ethics with wildlife photography \n**About the Instructor:**\nJoel Cohen\nWildlife Conservationist & Photographer.\nJoel moved to South Melbourne Beach in 1989 at the age of 13. He saw his first momma loggerhead sea turtle lay eggs that summer and saw his first North Atlantic right whale mom and calf that winter while out surfing. He fell in love with the wildlife that surrounds us. After working long hours for many years\, he was able to carve out time to volunteer with several local wildlife groups and learn more about the incredible abundance of wildlife we have here. He is currently in his fifth season as an active volunteer with the Sea Turtle Preservation Society and also the North Atlantic right whale conservation group under the Marine Resources Council. Joel also volunteers with several other local wildlife groups.

Tour America’s first National Wildlife Refuge by tram. Travel back in time to 1903 when President Theodore Roosevelt’s executive order designated the island as the nation’s first national wildlife refuge for the protection of nesting birds. \nPelican Island NWR is home to thousands of species of wildlife and a place for birds to rest and refuel during spring and fall migrations. The upland habitat is home to gopher tortoises\, bobcats\, and snakes. \nThe tram and tour leaders will meet us at the Welcome Center near the bathrooms. **Please be there by 7:45 AM**. This is the only bathroom on the refuge available for use. The tour lasts about 2 hours and will take us to 3 different areas on the Refuge. At each stop the Refuge volunteers will provide information about the history of NWR’s and education about local wildlife. No walking is required\, however there will be the option to step off the tram at each stop for those interested. \nOne of our junior birders\, Melina\, will serve as our greeter. George Thomas will be our gird guide. Limited mobility members can bring a guest and will receive first priority for themselves and their guest. DESCRIPTION:**Roseate Spoonbill: Optics and Images**\nDozens of state-imperiled roseate spoonbills and tricolored herons join snowy and great egrets to nest each year at Stick Marsh Critical Wildlife Area (CWA). Stick Marsh includes two tree islands in the St. John’s Water Management Area’s Stick Marsh/Farm 13 Reservoir in Fellsmere. At sunset\, thousands of wading birds fly into the islands to roost.\nStick Marsh CWA is adjacent to T.M. Goodwin Wildlife Management Area\, a site along the Great Florida Birding Trail. It is easily viewed from shore. The islands are closed to entry year-round\, and the in-water buffer is closed seasonally to protect nesting birds during the breeding season.\nRoseate Spoonbills and their young can be view from land while looking across to the two Stick Marsh islands. Nesting season is a beautiful photography opportunity. \n** We will meet in the dirt parking lot and walk across the bridge. For those with heavy photography equipment or special walking assistance/reduced mobility needs\, you can park your vehicle across the bridge\, near the viewing area. This space is limited to a few cars.** \n**Birding by Chair & Camera (bring your own chair):**\nThis field trip will include the opportunity to explore use of optics and photography equipment while enjoying the view of the nesting birds. Participants will have the opportunity to try out several different styles\, brands and types of binoculars. Birders can also learn about digi-scoping techniques and test out scope adapters. Photographers are encouraged to share tips while capturing images of the nesting birds. **Bring a folding chair**\, a beverage\, and your curiosity to learn about optics and equipment to observe and capture wildlife images. \nDirections: This can be a confusing place to locate as multiple properties are all adjoined (TM Goodwin\, Fellsmere Grade Recreation Area\, etc). Coming from the north\, go PAST (south) St. Sebastian River Preserve State Park on Babcock Road. Cross the canal and turn right (west) on Fellsmere Grade Road. **Travel 6.5 miles until the road dead ends into a park lot next to a bridge.** \n**** You will pass 2 boats ramps along the way. The address for this is: North Peninsula State Park\, 40 High Bridge Rd\, Ormond Beach\, FL 32176 \nPaddle 6.5 miles. This is downstream\, but there is not much of a current. There should be white pelicans to see near the end of the paddle. There is no shade on this trip. It will be in the salt marshes.\nPlease bring s broad-brimmed hat or a note from your dermatologist. SUMMARY:Florida Native Bees: Education\, Identification and Hands-On Community Science
DESCRIPTION:**Florida’s Native Bees: Biology\, Identification and Conservation**\nSarah Anderson (PhD Candidate) will introduce our group to some of the most common and notable Florida native bee species\, including some interesting specialist bees. Her presentation will focus on where to find native bees\, how to identify them\, and steps we can take as nature enthusiasts to help conserve these bees. Following the program we will have an opportunity to get up close and personal with bees both in a remote laboratory and exploring the Sams House property. \nThe program will include a hands-on opportunity to learn about native bee biology\, search for them in the gardens and trails\, examine specimens under a microscope\, and participate in adding observations into iNaturalist to contribute to community science. \nFlorida is home to more than 300 species of native bees\, of which 29 of those are endemic. We will circle Pelican Island\, visit Pauls Island and then go around and paddle up Spratt Creek. It will probably be a 6 mile paddle\, so be sure you can keep up with the group physically. Please bring water\, whistle\, and PDF. We will meet at 8:30 am and be paddling by 8:50 am. You can drop off your boat at the launch and then park down the dirt road.

We’ll meet at the boat ramp on the bridge east of Wabasso (west of Wabasso Island)\, launch from there\, travel north up Spratt Creek (eastern Indian River) to Pelican Island. Pelican Island is protected\, so we can only paddle around it. However\, there is a little beach area on Pauls Island to the west that we can stop and take a break before paddling back to the parking area.

SUMMARY:Jetty Park Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join Megan Berg for a walk Tuesday\, February 21\, 2023\, at Jetty Park in Port Canaveral. There is a fee to drive into Jetty Park – $15 per day per car or an annual pass for Brevard Residents for $25. **Passes can not be purchased at the gate\, they must be purchased ahead of time online at** https://www.portcanaveral.com/Recreation/Jetty-Park-Beach-Pier \nFrom the GFBWT website: This park’s jetty is the last land ships pass as they leave Port Canaveral\, headed out to sea. At the north end of the park\, check the ship turning basin from the jetty pier. The turning basin provides refuge for the occasional Common Eider and Surf Scoter in the fall and winter\, as well as Common Loons\, Double-crested Cormorants\, and Red-breasted Mergansers. Shorebirds such as Ruddy Turnstones and Willets are common\, and Purple Sandpipers are recorded in the winter. Large flocks of Royal\, Sandwich and Forster’s Terns\, and Black Skimmers loaf on the beach\, and Reddish Egret\, Roseate Spoonbill\, American Avocet\, and Lesser Black-backed Gull are noted regularly. The site is renowned for attracting rarities; Iceland\, Sabine’s\, and Franklin’s Gull have all been recorded as well as Arctic Tern\, and Razorbill. Check the channel markers for roosting Brown Booby. Scope offshore for seabirds such as Northern Gannet and watch for Parasitic and Pomarine Jaegers chasing gulls and terns. A small hammock on-site can be good for songbirds during migration. While walking along the fishing pier look for young sea turtles feeding close to the pilings and dolphins are often spotted close to shore.\nThis site has 232 species reported in eBird overall with over 139 species in February.\nWe will meet at 4:00 pm at the parking lot near the flag pole and restrooms.
