See the Report Out Meetup Announcement in late June. \nAs a bonus this year there will be a prize for the most bird species seen in Brevard County by a Space Coast Audubon Society member. The winner will receive two tickets to the Brevard Zoo at the SCAS September Membership Meeting on September 15th (or mailed to you if you can’t make the meeting). To qualify you must be a SCAS Member and have submitted your results to the June Challenge Website. \nThe June Challenge begins on Thursday\, June 1. \nThis year the Florida June Challenge has been adopted by Wings Over Florida and The Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail. The aim of the competition is for each individual contestant to see as many species as possible within the boundaries of his or her county between June 1st and June 30th. \nRules for the Challenge: \n1. Count only birds found within a single county\, ideally the one you live in. Explore your home turf and find some new birding spots. (Doing more than one county is permissible\, but each must be reported separately.)\n2. Each bird on your list must be seen\, not just heard. There have been complaints in the past about the no-heard-birds rule. The most substantial objection involved the possibility that secretive birds would be harassed until they came into view. Simply put – Don’t do that! Respect the birds. Use tapes judiciously and avoid harassment. Rely on patience and birding skill.\n3. Share your unusual bird sightings with others. It is\, after all\, a friendly competition. You’ll be competing with birders in your own county to see who can amass the longest individual list\, but let the others know if you find something good so they can go out and look for it.\n4. Any free-flying bird is countable for the purposes of the Challenge but keep track of how many ABA-countable and non-countable species are on your list. Report them in this format: “Total number of species seen (number that are ABA countable / number that are not)\,” e.g.\, 115 (112 / 3). If your local population of an exotic species is recognized as established by the ABA\, then any member of that population is an ABA-countable bird. Otherwise put it on your non-countable list. \nHints for new Challengers: Bird as much as you can during the first and last weeks of the month\, to get late spring and early fall migrants. Those of you in landlocked counties\, check your big lakes for coastal strays like gulls\, terns\, and pelicans. \nAnd remember! The deadline for results is midnight on Monday\, July 3rd. SUMMARY:Mangroves of Thousand Island - Cocoa Beach
DESCRIPTION:For this paddle we’ll stay local and explore Thousand Islands in Cocoa Beach. We’ve done this one before\, and it’s a favorite. There are lots of mangrove trails to wind through\, along with open water for those less adventurous (or with longer kayaks/paddleboards)! Meet at Ramp Road Park at 8:45 to launch by 9:00. Everyone should be in the water by 9. This is a popular spot for kayaking. There’s lots of parking\, but you should still get there early to get a spot! We will need an organizer/leader for this trip if anyone has done it before and wants to do that.

SUMMARY:Frog Identification and Field Practice: Frog Watch at Brevard Zoo
DESCRIPTION:Space Coast Audubon is joining forces with the Brevard Zoo to offer a private group FrogWatch training program and field practice. The class will be held after hours in the education center\, with field practice inside the Zoo property. A $5.00 donation (cash only – collected at the door) is required to cover cost of materials. Each participant will receive a flashdrive with the frog calls. **** Materials must be ordered in advance\, so please only sign up if you can definitely attend. You will be responsible to cover the $5 fee if you cancel less than 72 hours from the class start time.**** \nFrogWatch USA is a citizen science program established in 1998 to provide individuals\, groups and families with opportunities to learn about wetlands in their communities by reporting on the calls of local frogs and toads. Through Brevard Zoo’s FrogWatch USA training program\, trained individuals will be able to listen for frogs and toads during evenings and submit their observations to a national online database. **Check in will begin at 5:45 at the EdZOOcation gate north of the zoo’s main entrance.** The training will start at 6:00 pm\, and will conclude with an immersive in the field practice in the Brevard Zoo Wetlands classroom\, a pavilion overlooking Brevard Zoo’s restored wetlands habitat. \nPlease Bring: $5 cash donation\, refillable water bottle\, bug spray\, and wear shoes that can get wet or muddy. \nLooking forward to sharing another tool for contributing to Community Science data.\nRochelle

DESCRIPTION:**(Courtesy Post to make our members aware of this Event – Space Coast Audubon is not hosting this event)** \nRegarding the dispute between the EEL Program and the Town of Malabar regarding the Malabar Scrub Sanctuary\, a conflict resolution meeting will be held. \nThe meeting is public and public speakers will be allowed. The issue here is that the off-road bikers want the trees preserved throughout the property to shade the trails. The property has multiple families of Florida Scrub Jays and had good scrub habitat if maintained properly. This property is attractive for scrub jays because it is very close to other scrub habitat with jays\, including Jordan Scrub\, another EEL sanctuary. Mike Knight\, with support of the SMC\, has offered to preserve the trees along the property borders and to move the bike trails to the edges. Apparently\, the mountain bikers and some on the Town Council won’t accept that offer. \nIf you are interested in attending this meeting\, you are welcome to do so and provide your input if you would like. Speakers will likely need to submit a speaker card and each speaker typically gets 3 minutes only. \nLocation is the First Baptist Church fellowship hall. 1665 Malabar Road in Malabar. The meeting starts at 10am.

DESCRIPTION:***Florida’s Butterflies & How to Garden for Them*** is a neatly packaged presentation that shares a lifetime of information gleaned from the author’s interest in Florida’s butterflies and his efforts to attract them to the home landscape. Answered are the questions: Why garden for butterflies\, what makes butterflies different from moths\, and why are populations declining? Also highlighted are their life cycles\, host\, and favorite nectar plants. Attendees will learn ways they can easily attract these flying beauties to their own properties. The author has participated in annual North American Butterfly Association counts throughout Central Florida for the last 10 years and has a good knowledge of Florida’s butterfly species\, their native hostplants\, and the perils they face. \nFollowing the presentation\, we will walk through the butterfly garden and native plant areas to observe butterflies. Ed (presenter/instructor) will be available to assist with identification. Depending on how many butterflies we see\, we may also go for a short hike to look for additional species. The classroom and butterfly garden area are fully accessible for limited mobility guests. \n***** This program is being offered for free and the instructor is donating his time. Tip donations for the instructor are optional\, and greatly appreciated.***** \n**About our instructor (Ed Perry):**\nEd Perry recently retired as a 31-year Park Ranger at Sebastian Inlet State Park. Ed is a 56 year-old Florida native that graduated from the University of Florida in 1988. DESCRIPTION:While not an actual paddling event\, this event supports something near and dear to any paddlers heart – clean water and beaches! BeachFly Brewing Company is hosting several ocean\, beach\, and lagoon organizations for an educational and fundraising festival April 29 at its location on Barton Blvd in Rockledge. Organizations represented include Surfrider Foundation\, Sea Turtle Preservation Society and more! BeachFly Brewing Company will donate a portion of sales to the participating organizations. The Ocean Lega-Sea Festival is on **April 29\, 2023** from **3 PM to 8 PM** at **513 Barton Blvd in Rockledge**. \nThe organizations will have items for sale and educational materials. In addition\, televisions inside the brewery will continually display educational information from the groups. Each organization also has the opportunity to do a live presentation concerning their cause during the festival. DESCRIPTION:Would you like to contribute to community science data while learning to identify living things in the wild? Join us to for an introduction and tips on how to use the iNaturalist APP. This APP records observations of nearly any type of living organism including: frogs\, plants\, snakes\, spiders\, insects\, and trees. \nSams House naturalist\, Shannon Steele\, and Chelsea Miller\, Space Coast Audubon member will deliver an overview of the application for approximately 45 minutes. Following the presentation\, participants will be set free to explore the Sams House gardens\, hiking trails\, bird feeders and any space where leaving creatures can be found to capture observations and practice the skills learned. \nPlease download the iNaturalist APP prior to the class as the WiFi is a bit unreliable and cell signal can be spotty. Be sure to grant access (permission) for the iNaturalist APP to use your phone camera.

SUMMARY:Paddling St. Lucie Inlet Preserve State Park
DESCRIPTION:This classic Florida barrier island is accessible only by boat\, and it is worth the ride. A boardwalk takes visitors through mangrove forests and hammocks of live oaks\, cabbage palms\, paradise trees and wild limes to a neatly preserved Atlantic beach. The preserve is a favorite of nature students interested in learning about the native flora and fauna of Florida barrier islands. The kayak trail is 4.2 miles long and takes a leisurely three hours to complete\, meandering through mangrove estuaries and maritime hammocks where you can see the plant and animals that make their home at the park. Wading birds such as blue heron\, white ibis and snowy egrets are common along the trail\, and there is a good chance you will view osprey flying overhead. We’ll stop at the south beach access point to park your kayak for a short walk over to the beautiful park beach.\nLaunch from Cove Road Park – parking is very limited. The event fee covers state park entrance fees.

The upland portion of the conservation area consists of improved pasture\, scrub and planted pine.\nOne of the special highlights of this property is its high concentration of osprey nests. The cypress that ring the outer perimeter of this blackwater lake boasts one of the highest concentrations of nesting osprey in central Florida. Staff at the Boy Scout Camp located on the northern shore of the lake have reported counting more than 100 active nests in the cypress trees that ring the lake. \nMore details to follow.

This is the Saturday of Easter weekend for your planning purposes. \nFrom their website:\nThe middle section from Sargeant Park to Morris Bridge to Trout Creek Park\, about 7.5 miles\, is a popular section of river\, with easy to moderate paddling – a few pullovers may be encountered depending on water level. Excellent for wildlife viewing. Tree canopy provides shade. Only one parking fee is needed for these three parks\,\nthe others have separate fees.

He brought his beloved Bucktail canoe\, built by the already-famous J. Henry Rushton of Canton\, New York. Sears\, pen-named Nessmuk\, was the most famous outdoor writer of his day\, and his 1885 series of articles entitled “The Bucktail in Florida” made him and Rushton even more celebrated than ever. A few years ago\, more than a century after Nessmuk’s subtropical adventure\, Dr. Grace found a small wooden canoe and quickly realized its historical significance. Located near the site of Nessmuk’s travels\, after restoring it\, Michael took it back to the very same places Nessmuk paddled so long ago. This presentation will be a photographic journey through this little canoe’s long history and a stirring biography of Nessmuk\, Rushton\, and those around them. \n**Presented by:** Dr. Michael Grace \n**About the Presenter:** Since 1999\, Dr. Michael Grace has served as faculty in Biological Sciences and as an administrator for the College of Science and then the College of Engineering and Science. A behavioral neuroscientist\, his work has centered on vision and related sensory systems in whales\, snakes\, giant marine fish\, and other fascinating animals with the goals of understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms of vision and developing “biomimetic” artificial sensors. Dr. Grace also built and ran Florida Tech’s High-Resolution Microscopy Center. Away from campus\, he has been a lifelong outdoorsman and collector and restorer of historic small boats. Widely published on the history of wooden boats\, he currently serves as President of the international Wooden Canoe Heritage Association\, a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and study of wooden boat history. |

He saw his first momma loggerhead sea turtle lay eggs that summer and saw his first North Atlantic right whale mom and calf that winter while out surfing. He fell in love with the wildlife that surrounds us. After working long hours for many years\, he was able to carve out time to volunteer with several local wildlife groups and learn more about the incredible abundance of wildlife we have here. He is currently in his fifth season as an active volunteer with the Sea Turtle Preservation Society and also the North Atlantic right whale conservation group under the Marine Resources Council. Drive a few cars back to the launch point. Yvette will watch the boats while we do the shuttle.\nPaddle downstream. It will take about 3.5 hours to paddle with a few stops. There are no traditional restrooms at either end.- FYI\nWe will see lots of gators. While there are no regulations to prevent you from bringing an inflatable\, I would not advise it. DESCRIPTION:**En Plein Air Drawing Class**\nLearn to sketch nature in real life! This is a lesson on how to draw natural items from direct observation. After the teacher demo\, participants will practice with paper and pencil before heading outdoors to draw. Bring your favorite sketchbook/drawing paper\, graphite pencils and erasers. Also bring color pencils\, watercolor paints\, markers if you wish to add color later. The instructors and host will have a limited supply of paper and some colored pencils for anyone who doesn’t bring their own. \nPlease bring: sun hat\, refillable water bottle\, sunscreen\, folding chair\, and snacks. If you have a Florida State Park pass\, please check the expiration date and don’t forget to bring it. There is a water refill station next to the restrooms. If you own a camera\, you may find it useful to take photos to capture details of your subject you might want to add later on. \nBio:\nJessie Sodano is an experienced art teacher and birder living in Brevard County for the past 34 years. She has a Master’s degree in Art Education from Florida State University and has taught art at all levels in the public schools. She currently teaches photography and digital art with Brevard Virtual school. She loves drawing en plein air on her many travels. She lives in Melbourne where she enjoys spending time in the garden\, and with pets\, family and friends. \n**Please plan to arrive at the park by 8:15am\, to allow adequate time to pay entrance fee/show your State Park pass\, park\, and check in before the class begin at 8:30am**. The room will be used for another group\, so we will need to wrap up instruction by 9:40am before going outside to practice. \nCourse Fee: Free \nPark Fee: The venue is inside a State Park which charges a daily use fee. Cost is $8 per vehicle (up to 8 passengers) or $4 for an individual (in as car by themselves)\, or free for Florida State Park annual pass holders (or you can purchase an annual pass onsite). \nTraining Location:\nSebastian Inlet State Park (Indian River County Side)\nWe will meet inside the Fishing Museum on the south side of the bridge (Follow signs to campground entrance/Indian River County side) \nRestrooms are available throughout the park. SUMMARY:Pelican Island NWR Tram Tour ** Priority for Reduced/Limited Mobility Guests**
DESCRIPTION:**** Please read special registration process for this field trip****\nLimited or reduced mobility guests will receive priority booking prior to other reservations being confirmed. Tour America’s first National Wildlife Refuge by tram. Travel back in time to 1903 when President Theodore Roosevelt’s executive order designated the island as the nation’s first national wildlife refuge for the protection of nesting birds. \nPelican Island NWR is home to thousands of species of wildlife and a place for birds to rest and refuel during spring and fall migrations. The upland habitat is home to gopher tortoises\, bobcats\, and snakes. \nThe tram and tour leaders will meet us at the Welcome Center near the bathrooms. **Please be there by 7:45 AM**. This is the only bathroom on the refuge available for use. The tour lasts about 2 hours and will take us to 3 different areas on the Refuge. At each stop the Refuge volunteers will provide information about the history of NWR’s and education about local wildlife. No walking is required\, however there will be the option to step off the tram at each stop for those interested. \nOne of our junior birders\, Melina\, will serve as our greeter. George Thomas will be our gird guide. Limited mobility members can bring a guest and will receive first priority for themselves and their guest. We have two trams and the spaces are limited to total number of seats. PLEASE indicate when registering if you are a limited mobility/special assistance guest. This includes those who can only walk short distance\, anyone who walks with use of cane/walker/wheelchair\, or participants with breathing conditions. PLEASE let us know by replying to the registration question if we should include you in the limited mobility group. This group will receive priority registration for two weeks and all other registrations will be moved to the waitlist. DESCRIPTION:**Roseate Spoonbill: Optics and Images**\nDozens of state-imperiled roseate spoonbills and tricolored herons join snowy and great egrets to nest each year at Stick Marsh Critical Wildlife Area (CWA). Stick Marsh includes two tree islands in the St. John’s Water Management Area’s Stick Marsh/Farm 13 Reservoir in Fellsmere. At sunset\, thousands of wading birds fly into the islands to roost.\nStick Marsh CWA is adjacent to T.M. Goodwin Wildlife Management Area\, a site along the Great Florida Birding Trail. It is easily viewed from shore. The islands are closed to entry year-round\, and the in-water buffer is closed seasonally to protect nesting birds during the breeding season.\nRoseate Spoonbills and their young can be view from land while looking across to the two Stick Marsh islands. Nesting season is a beautiful photography opportunity. \n** We will meet in the dirt parking lot and walk across the bridge. For those with heavy photography equipment or special walking assistance/reduced mobility needs\, you can park your vehicle across the bridge\, near the viewing area. This space is limited to a few cars.** \n**Birding by Chair & Camera (bring your own chair):**\nThis field trip will include the opportunity to explore use of optics and photography equipment while enjoying the view of the nesting birds. Participants will have the opportunity to try out several different styles\, brands and types of binoculars. Birders can also learn about digi-scoping techniques and test out scope adapters. Photographers are encouraged to share tips while capturing images of the nesting birds. **Bring a folding chair**\, a beverage\, and your curiosity to learn about optics and equipment to observe and capture wildlife images. \nDirections: This can be a confusing place to locate as multiple properties are all adjoined (TM Goodwin\, Fellsmere Grade Recreation Area\, etc). Coming from the north\, go PAST (south) St. Sebastian River Preserve State Park on Babcock Road. Cross the canal and turn right (west) on Fellsmere Grade Road. **Travel 6.5 miles until the road dead ends into a park lot next to a bridge.** \n**** You will pass 2 boats ramps along the way. Both have restrooms and I strongly encourage you to use one of these\, as the one near Fellsmere Recreation Area isn’t maintained and is absolutely disgusting. ****
